Catholic 101: The Sign of the Cross

Do you go Up down left right or up down right left?

For some reason this gesture makes me feel much calmer when I do it. I believe in Christ and the Trinity but do not explicitly follow any Church. So it hits deeper than I'd expect.
Well you explained why at the end and I completely agree, no Church can separate us from The Christ.

How come every like guide or what have you says forehead waist right shoulder and then left? Basically everyone I see does the opposite shoulders.

I am not a Catholic, but was raised as a Mormon as a child and then turned Christian at 13. For many years, I knew there was a significance of the sign of the cross. As of late, because of my health issues, I started signing the cross from time to time and I noticed myself to be getting a bit better, believing that God and Jesus Christ will provide. I have great respect for Catholics. I made this response because Father said that he guarantees if someone signs the cross, that person is a Catholic. I felt a bit conflicted: must we be a Catholic to do the sign? Just don’t want to rub it the wrong way.

Do I go to my left shoulder to my right or the other way around?

I came here to find out which shoulder should we touch first. Disappointed did not answer my question. Will keep searching. May God bless you all.

Im sorry but father just made an upside down cross. I was always taught that the son goes down to your belly button in order to do the correct form of a cross. Otherwise its upside down. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s important to note that you go from left to right not right to left when doing the cross, some do it backwards—can you explain tho why it is this way cuz I’ve forgotten. 🙏🏻

Is it wrong for a non denominational follower of Christ to do the sign of the cross? I don’t belong to any set denomination of the Christian faith but I still follow Jesus and acknowledge him as the son of God. Would it be wrong for me to do it?

I’m part catholic and Episcopalian and other branches too! Episcopalians make the sign of the cross too!

In the Orthodox church we do the very same thing with signing the cross but we take our three fingers pushed together (thumb, pointer and middle finger) to signify the Trinity ❤

I’m not Catholic, but I make the sign of the cross often when I pray.

With all due respect to you Fr, was that really a clear proper demonstration of the sign of the cross? It seems to appear that what I saw was the inverted (cross upside down) version, from what I was taught.
You did seem to properly clarify correctly with your words though, when you mentioned the shoulders.
I was taught the same sequential movements as you did, but with the cross beam high up, (from shoulder to shoulder; across the top of the heart), not "low beam cross"; upside down, below the heart. (Like our president did recently). My understanding is, that has a different meaning.

Real question. I’m a Protestant Christian, but the way Catholics do the sign of the cross, the cross looks upside down. Can someone help me understand this? Does anyone else see that? 🥺

i’m not even catholic, i go to a non-denominational church (imo it’s basically a nicer version of baptist church), but i want to do this! if it shows god that i love him, that’s all that matters.
