Finding a good stylist is hard. My little sister is nonverbal and autistic and very scalp sensitive. There is one stylist who does her hair. She is always on time, courteous, and quick. She knows that me or my dad will tip her $40 cash minimum but doesn't charge an arm and leg even though my little sis can be a cantankerous client. Recently she retired but will still come to my dad's place to do my sis's hair. I don't know what we will do without her, she is getting old.

I am a pet stylist but I can only do so much. I trim my own hair and husband's, but twice a year I go to my local stylist.

Ironically I see the same attitude among Instagram groomers. They are there to make the dog cute for social media, their motivation has nothing to do with grooming. They don't care about pets or their clients.

As an "older" woman, I feel like the Instagram requirement is almost tantamount to age discrimination. A lot of Gen-Xers and older folks don't use social media the way younger people do. A lot of us don't necessarily have TikTok and Insta accounts. If I see that someone has an social media requirement, that says to me that they only want customers who are under 40.

Absolutely right, it's illegal to record people without consent. They can be sued for stating that in their policies, very bold and dumb move. Both parties must consent, they need to ask in their policies and as you say offering incentives is a good idea to make someone feel comfortable not just basically demand a photo without permission. That can be looked at as bullying, coercion and duress, you gotta be crazy as hell to put that in a policy. 😂 lmao

Rules like this are a response to chronic issues that can be dealt with no other way. Hit people in their pocket books and they WILL listen...Lateness costs money and there is NO excuse for being late(within reason) but I know stylist's have 30 minute windows and lateness just cant apply. Dont be late. Period. The lateness of the stylist can often be linked to 2,3, or 4 chronically late people piggy backing and in domino fashion, progressively screw everyone's day. Strict provisions like this are result of YEARS of people taking advantage, believe it.

Exactly, why I stopped going; last time I paid a professional stylist that I had been going to for years even prior to her having two children, I paid her three hundred dollars for sew in and weave; and she didn't allow me to choose the weave in which, I didn't like my fault for that one; then this heifer tells me that I have to pay the shampoo girl; and I am like I just gave you three hundred dollars why do I have to pay the shampoo girl she isn;t even licensed; then on top of that I gave her an additional $50 dollars for my next booking, so when I contacted her and told her about herself; she got smart as hell with me; so I ask the beotch for a refund; knowing that she wasn't going to give it to me; she then tells me that she will do my hair one more time; and that it will be the last time; I told that heifer why would I want her to do my hair; and that I wasn't getting a refund back; but you see God don't like ugly and he isn't too fond of pretty, so then the pandemic hit and the bitch was out of work for real; so Karma is the Covid-19 in this case!!! And I have never been back since then; being buying all of the wigs; and then I went to the AFricans because I had build rapport with them, and I ran to the bank not to far from the shop and when I returned five minutes laters; somebody else was sitting in my chair; and I am the type of person, I don't allow anyone touching my hair due to unwanted spirits; fast forward My mother passed away two years ago, and that was the last time I went to the shop. So in 2024; I am going to go back to the braid shop simply because we are Muslims and I will give it another go bt far as Salons, no ma''am.

Then when I would go to my cousins house, I would have to take her to the grocery store wait for her to feed or attend to her grandchildren as if I wsn't paying her; chile; I"m done with people who are no longer serving me; so no ma'am these people are all about themselves and dong give a fuk about you and your time; and time is one of the biggest commodities that we will never get back; so I am moving to Alaska; in March, so my girls (wigs will be traveling with me)

You nailed this...when you called yourself a customer, versus a client. Customers are transactions, where as clients are booked and catered to with an established license. If you're willing to pay to be a client, find a licensed stylist who put their time and effort in earning a cosmetologist's degree and made a career/business of working with and maintaining healthy and groomed hair, to especially include "protective" styles. You are a beautiful young lady and you deserve all that you mention. It's up to you to better discern...the "stylists" are the variables....YOU, are the constant.

As someone with thick hair and 4c hair (I'm natural now)... I feel this. As a person with natural hair, it irritates me when they want me to detangle and wash my own hair. Um... I'm going to you because I need a professional to do that. If I were to wash and detangle my hair, then I might as well do the rest of my hair. It's so funny that I go to people to do my natural hair, and they expect me to detangle and wash my own hair, just so they can put twists in them (which I do request). Though when I go to a person for a silk press, they're able to do it all. Different stylists with different standards.

It’s rough out here honestly. It cost 5-10k just to get a license. Certain services don’t require a license for Florida. Cause it takes one person reporting you and you can go to jail. This is why some stylists don’t wash and blow dry. That’s considered a service that requires a license. Definitely don’t overcharge and know the laws. However, there is nothing wrong with a home salon just make sure you know the laws. It takes one angry customer and now you got a misdemeanor.

I had a hairstylist say that when she was younger, she would "give me a run for my money" and kept talking about my body the first time I went to get my hair done. I didn't want to end up bald so I didn't say anything but it really isn't right. It was so random and uncalled for, I've had other stylists and yeah one or two were off but I never experienced anything like that before. My husband said it's prob insecurity

I think some of these IG stylists are just posting hair as a hustle. It is not really a career for them. They are happy getting a lil $25 deposit out of someone for one time if that is all they get. They are not trying to build a clientele and get to the bag.

People are getting sub-standard, unprofessional behavior because they tolerate it. You XX folks need to stop wearing anything that XY folks wear to look like you. Start with the lashes and the makeup. Strive for your natural beauty instead of what is being mimicked by "them". Switch it up, XX!

Everything you said is on point. This is very true. I used to LOVE going to the salon. Now, I dread it. The unprofesiional attitudes, the laziness and being taken advantage of has turned me off too. Ayana fite I totally feel you! This is one of the reasons why I stopped going to the beauty salon and start learning how to do my own hair, which is down my back, no split ends, btw. If I can find a hair stylist where I live, who follows the old standards the professional standards set by the board of health which allows you to be a licensed cosmetologist then I may go to them two or three times a year but so far I've had no such luck.

What I really want to know is…why do they get an attitude and charge so much extra for long/thick hair to braid??? Isn’t it the same amount of time and effort when adding hair??
And also, what is considered appropriate to tip? I usually tip the Braider who braids my daughter’s hair (15 yrs old, no hair added) $15 to $20. I’m not sure if that’s okay.

A year later I’ve been done with stylist since 2019 they are just ridiculous! That app booking an appointment and having to use your credit card insane. Nope done with the entire set up. My number 1 pet peeve is when they style it how they want instead of what you asked for. And all them pictures, videos you not paying me to do that and you should ask first. 80’s,90’s no social media needed if you good ppl will come word of mouth still works! That persons hair done well is your advertisement. I just can’t do stylist anymore and the diva antics. I will go somewhere get my ends clipped and style myself. A lot of white salons may not style our hair but are way more professional with set prices why is that? Get your professionalism game together and stop over booking and over charging ppl!
