I used this technique with only a ring light. I do not own a flash. is the flash what is preventing the glare on her face? my GF gets huge glare on her cheeks.

Thank you Daniel. Really enjoyed this video and found it very useful, especially how well you explain the settings and how they effect each light source. It's strange how people criticise the fact that you are using a ring light! Hahhah. I would say to those people that 1) the tutorial is about taking better shots with this type of light 2) not everyone has the same personal taste , this is why photography is so interesting. People have preferences for sure, but these are professional, well thought out and executed shots. Thanks again !

The lighting from the ring light is still too flat even though it's the fill, and the tiny circle catch lights in the eyes looks hideous. I'd rather use a combination of a large(r) softbox for the Paramount lighting and a circular disk reflector from below for a little fill to reduce contrast without it looking clam shell - size and position are the secret. Add a very low power kicker with modest diffusion on the same stand below the key light for catch lights if the softbox isn't creating them. Easy to clamp a small very low power kicker light with a modest diffuser to the stand - and that's only if it's needed for them. Ditch the ring light portraiture. It's for macros and forensic pathology photography of dead people and their body parts by medical examiners and coroners.

She is a little cutie real cute. I always see with actors, their head shots are done with some sort of either ring light or beauty dish that is more straight on front shot. Giving their black and white images a very flat often blown out look. This is common I imagine for those types of head shots but is it the norm? Perhaps creating a more neutral look for the actor so as not to type cast themselves to casting directors with mood lighting thus hampering their chances to land a particular role.

Random, off-topic question for you, what do you use to organize and archive your files? I'm guessing back in the day you used to use Lightroom, but now with Capture One being the standard, at least for tethering, how do catalog (pun?) all your images?

great video as always! I'd be interested to know why you start at F5.6, is it because it's the aperture that gives the sharpest image ?

“I hate ring light“ said nobody under the age of 65🙄 Styles change… flat light is popular and so is the circular catch light.

Excellent as always, Daniel! I don’t personally like the ring-shaped catch lights from beauty rings, but I guess that doesn’t bother many people. I do like how your setup resulted in a much more beautiful beauty shot.

I like the fill on her face from the ring light but I hate the ringlight reflection in her eyes. It's just personal preference, but I think it makes the subject look like she's having eye surgery.

Very nice! Thanks for showing that combo as well as the aperture variation. A while back a friend whose daughter is attending Beauty School shared that at the school they have a ring light like the one you used so when the students finish a project they take few pictures with their phones.
