The Surprising Story of the Face of Dota

juggernaut, aka yurnero is a copycat of blademaster juggernaut from warcraft 3, one of the default heroes from orc faction, since original dota was a modded warcrat 3 map. yurnero has nothing original, all his skills are blademaster skills with variation, windwalk and illusion were replaced later on, one of the few heroes that has barely changed in 20 years.

I don't remember every big hero in every patch period, but I remember watching a lot of Dota 2 during 2015, and this is a moment that makes me sad Stories of Dota only focuses on TI and generally ignores the outcome of other tournaments between the Internationals. It may seem weird that Juggernaut, after hardly being used in TI4, got what were effectively a large handful of nerfs going into TI5; but that's because there was a several-month long period where 'The Spin Lords' (Axe, Juggernaut, and Troll Warlord) dominated the competitive scene (before giving way to Sniper-dominated meta for a short period, good times).

The Juggernaut build during this period was extraordinary, getting one point in each skill and then dumping each level up on stats unless the game went late enough they had to start leveling them; EVERY SINGLE SKILL for Juggernaut was a value point, which should never happen. Usually heroes that are in a very good place have 2 strong skills, and a single skill that gets a lot of mileage from a single point, allowing you to skill it early and level up everything else until you're in your teens. But Juggernaut's skills were all so good at level one that Omnislash would often end up being the first skill maxed as Blade Fury was only used for Magic Immunity (and duration didn't scale) and low level trilane kills, healing ward was fine (and much cheaper) at level 1, and the damage boost from from raising Blade Dance past level 1 didn't match the value of getting health, mana, and damage from just picking stats every level. The changes in the 6.82-6.84 patches were designed to normalize Juggernaut more. Blade Fury was kind of his signature ability, hence it was given reverse mana scaling to incentivize leveling it and maxing it first. Blade Dance became an even better value point, but at least after these patches it was much less common for him to go a pure stat up build.

As SoD demonstrated in the earlier TI explanations, Juggernaut was a hero without a competitive niche in early Dota, and it was this early 2015 period before TI5 that really brought Juggernaut into the light as a potential carry, even though the circumstances going into TI5 kept him from his earlier 2015 popularity and dominance. After TI5, he was one of the few strong pub carries that always seemed to be, at worst, a decent carry option in the competitive scene.

I've just realized that famous tide ravage didn't hit dendi because he force staff'ed and ravage somehow had very small aoe compared to now. I think if it happens now, it requires 2 force staff to not get hit by ravage

In the Warcraft 3 DotA Juggernaut was a strength hero that had some similar abilities. He had the whirlwind, healing ward, but his crit was one of his regular abilities. His ultimate was a simple 100% damage buff that used to last as long as it's cooldown, but later it was nerfed to 45 seconds with a 1 minute cooldown. Back when Boots of Speed still stacked, I once got 112 hero kills in a single game with him. Fun times.
