Interesting how initiation rituals of some deities took place in caves very commonly in all cultures, in Central America we can still see caves today with the entrance carved like the mouth of monsters, which culminated in underground lakes with a bridge and things like that. Magnificent detail in human nature.

Could it be that heathenry and pagan philosophy are the basis of belief systems for the guardians or auxillary of Socrates Republic? That the variations occurred naturally from one region to another as the guards developed different specialties and were in more or less developed and populated regions? With smaller communities allowing for family lives for the guards but also put them more at risk of attack from outsiders and larger populations being more likely to engage in vice and artistry?

You touched on several topics that, each by themselves, could easily merit an hour long video alone. And for just an hour video, yours was probably the best such documentary I've ever seen on the topic. Please do continue. In this age, when Western European culture is so constantly under malicious attack and degradation, your videos are very important. It's the antidote of George Orwell's warning that the quickest way to destroy a people is to make them doubt their own history.

I came across this channel to learn more about some of my ancestors. My rabbit hole began with reading Bryan Sykes where he wrote that descendants of the I-M253 haplogroup trace their lineage to Wodan. As a Christian, I cannot abandon my faith, but learning about my ancestors and their culture is a blessing and for that, I will be forever thankful to you. Kudos Tom, your channel is a true blessing.

Also high praise to Eggers for putting together this beautiful piece of art, I am pretty sure it faced a lot of opposition from the usual suspects.

I watched it because of this video. I was terribly disappointed. Terrible writing, characters, editing and directing. I get the references etc. but this film feels like someone commissioned it and didn't bother to check if the end result was any good. And the end result is a disjointed filterfest of what the hell. And the incest element which made no sense considering how differently she felt for his father's brother than his father was just the final shitstamp.

I live in Australia, my cultural heritage on my father's side is Greek and on my mother's side seems to be Welsh or Irish from her father(his surname was Davis but I've been told it used to be O Davis. On her mother's side my Mother's Grandparents straight up migrated from Germany, Their name was Miller. I'm not sure if this is an Anglicisation due to WWII but my great grandparents definitely migrated to Australia from Germany. My Father's family was one of 5 farming families on the Island of Kalymnos and my grandfather was a kind of pater familias for our extended family and in fact was president of the Kalymnian Brotherhood in Australia. People would seek him out for advice before undertaking most major ventures. Part of my Grandfather's standing no doubt came from being head of a land owning family on a small island of sponge divers but also he was renowned for his integrity and incorruptibility. Anyway even though I love some of the festivals and sincerity of Orthodox Greek Christianity Intellectually I could never accept some of the infantile stories one has to accept as a Christian nor the fact that the goodness and obvious good sense in the core message presented as the direct teachings of Jesus is mostly ignored by most Christians most of the time. I have always felt an affinity for Vedic teaching, Buddhist philosophy and tasting a little of Taoist teaching and chi gong I've seen parallels in that philosophy and practice. The truths in these things to me are just self evident and almost seem to reach out and turn you in the right direction. Now seeing your presentation of Germanic paganism and even the wider Indo European spiritual heritage I see motifs that on the surface at least seem to point to a deep understanding of and appreciation of the same spiritual truths. These Scandinavian and other Germanic people's were obviously capable of understanding and conveying very sophisticated philosophical ideas. Odin sitting in the lotus position with thought and memory interweaving their way up his erect spine (intersecting at key Shakira's?) representing mirroring energy channels. The world tree as a metaphor for the cosmos, I obviously don't need to explain any of this to you, I'm just exploring it myself and it blows me away. You know I actually heard Roger Penrose once use the metaphor of a tree for the universe and he equated the rings inside of tree's being the one marker left as the universe expands to Infinity and fades that could both influence the next universal cycle and act as a counter of cycles. I'm just exploring all of these things. I wonder if anyone else can offer me some guidance or comment

Thx great presentation and productiion v much enjoyed it. One ot on the 'boar crested' Vendel period helmet, the boar (and the horse) was associated with the God Freyr, akin to the goat for Thor and the Raven/Wolf/horse/eagle of Odin etc. Freyr was representative of the Vanir whereas Odin was associted with the Aesir and the merger can be seen reflected clearly via the Younger Futhark.

While there is much to applaud in the film in terms of historical research, I feel it does not treat the tale through a sympathetic or realistic human eye. It has the "Christian gaze" or the "modern western secular gaze". The film views the pagan past as being strange, violent and having an infernal quality -the film is full of gloom, aggression and suffering -most scenes are even bled dry of colour (did colour only arrive in the world recently?) This infernal vision immediately separates us the viewer from the characters who exist in a world of a past that was painful, gloomy and inhabited by men who had plentiful testosterone, minimal human qualities and do not know the meaning of love. This is such a loss.

Germanic paganism is a very real human thing, it must not be portrayed as strange, frightening and inhuman. It is deeply human and natural -remember that in it our ancestors found the strength to deal with a challenging world. They were nurtured to do this as well as hardened. People need nurture to be able to do hard things. We do not actually gain strength from our tests -mental or physical but from how we put ourselves back together stronger after them. Heroes, like athletes and intellectuals, are built by a mixture of test and nurture and the director needs to take us on their journey through this.

This cold strangeness is sadly very typical of modern renderings of Germanic paganism. The first and most important thing a director who seeks greatness must do is to show us characters that the audience can identify with and so become bound up with. The mature of men is unchanged by the passing of the ages. They were like us emotionally and usually actually physically weaker than the average fit outdoors man today -from worse nutrition, sometimes high parasite burdens and a lack of optimal recovery opportunities post exercise. Where has the inner conflict of Hamlet gone? It is in the soul searching that he becomes heroic.

Would a western be shot like this? Would a war movie have such characters that lacked humanity? Would a historic epic be so lacking in empathy? Would a tale of indigenous pagan peoples from a different continent so lack warmth in depicting their spirituality? So why inflict modern western cultural prejudice on us?

Will some director please rid us of such emptiness. If you must give us gloom, do not make it strange and infernal, give us something more like Scandi noire. Give me someone I can like and identify with. Give me someone with warmth and soul, then make him live these things. This film is a teenage nerd's comic book fantasy of the pagan past. It contains what such a boy secretly fears and openly fantasises about but actually knows little of from experience.

Interesting parallel with the Mead of Wisdom.... Charlamagne, who was very much in favor of sobriety, referenced the "Wine of Learning" or the "Wine of Knowledge". He believe that the moderate amount of wine accompanied with study was acceptable. He must have been a fan of old Norse literature and/or themes I imagine.

Ha! Here in Ulster the common dialect word for shout or yell is 'gulder'. I think it originally comes from Ulster Scots. Its astonishingly close in sound and meaning to 'Galdr' to be coincidental.
I wouldnt be surprised if its used in Scotland and Northern England too.
