Fujifilm GFX100 II Review: NOT What We Were Expecting!

Hello Chris! Thank you for this excellent intro to the Fuji GFX 100 II. As a Nikon Z System landscape, product and macro photographer, I have been quite satisfied with the image sharpness and detail I obtain from the Nikon Z System (Z7, Z8 and several lenses). However, as I do on occasion produce very large prints (30"x40" and up), I've always had an interest in medium format. So, in your opinion, do you feel that this GFX100 II would give me a very substantial improvement in image quality (particularly image sharpness and detail rendition) in the large prints, over either my Nikon Z System or the Hasselblad X2D? (Also, as I don’t shoot video, that’s another reason the X2D appeals to me, as well as the NCS of the Hasselblad files, since I’m somewhat colorblind, and I've heard other reviewers state that color-correcting the Fuji files would be a nightmare, and for me in particular!) Thank you sir!

Wow, that is really shady how Fuji film advertises 14 bit raw and then secretly compresses it down to 12 bit raw inside the file when shooting rapidfire. Even shadier when they make the files still say 14 bit in post production software. This is making me think twice about getting a Fuji if that’s the direction that their marketing department is going. They should go ahead and hop in the bandwagon with Volkswagen and their diesel campaign.

Nikon deserves its flowers. I'm no big shot photographer, I have a Nikon D7100. It suckssss in low light but other than that its a really high quality camera with an easy to understand UI.

Really comprehensive review on stills features, but with all due respect this review COMPLETELY misses the mark in what makes the GFX100 II special for video production. While downsampling from 8K to 4K in full frame cameras is a better way to maintain sharpness and minimize sensor noise... that is NOT why someone would consider this for a production camera. The draw is optics not pixels. This is essentially pocket VistaVision, the focus falloff is the draw not just image sharpness. This is only parallel to the Alexa 65 or Panavision DXL2, but you can hang this around your neck! Talk about not seeing the forest through the trees.

Looks like a great camera; also, something I will never buy.

I don't know why Fuji continues to insist on putting the 'Q' menu button on the thumb grip. It was awful on the X-T30 and it's awful here.

FUJI is in wright path, we need only 2 format 1-Super 35 (APSC sensor size)as the historical manner of hollywwod with legendary lenses of 50s-80s 2-We need large format photography(medium in digital era which will be growth to large format in the future)

Chris in the crouch - and delivering some killer shots! 😂 I would say this should be a part of every review. Immediately shows what the camera can do with humans and not just back alley dumpsters. And kudos on the color and lines of this video, just gorgeous.

I saw video footage compared to the Alexa mini and honestly I couldn't tell the difference. If you add the spectacular photo image quality. plus the IBIS and 8 frames a second. What else could you ask for. Im a fashion portrait photographer who shoots some video, for the social media mostly. I think this is my solution, with a switch I shoot in video or photo. I might need to pop on a ND filter. Can anyone who owns it give me some feedback ?

The biggest miss in this review is Chris thinking he isn't a model.

I do not need a fast camera, I do not need flash, I NEVER do video, so I will prefer Hasselblad which also have better Lenses anyway !

do you have any idea when the heck fuji is going to release the tilt shift lenses? Nobody seems to know.... no human beings can buy them now. Fuji doesn't give the professional courtesy of any updates.

My favorite part of this camera is that it's pictures are literally indiscernible from any other camera on the planet that is half the price.

The fact that the video was shot by G9M2 is more interesting than the big old mid format. Look at that color!

the pc-sync port is important with a camera like this, as a mf digital, it can be used, via a lens board adaptor for LF monorails, or things like the cambo actus and it's bigger cousin, as a digital back (esp. considering the costs of a phase one, or leaf aptus solution), a much cheaper option + you get the simpler tethering and capture one, or photoshop workflow, than the other big digital backs out on the market.
for the above option the pc sync is necessary as it forms a quasi shutter signal, you use the leaf shutter lens, and the flash port gives the back the "go" to scan the sensor for recording the image, as well as the possibility for full sync with flash, a leaf shutter can sync up to 1\800 or 1\1000th of a second (hasselblad H system capability, as an example).

I completely disagree. If you want to do high quality video, get a proper video camera. If you want the best camera for portraits and landscapes, buy a well loved Nikon D750 for its dynamic range and image quality. The output will be superior than any hybrid camera on the market including the new Sony. If you want the absolute best portrait camera regardless of cost, then mate a Lumix S1 or Leica SL2 with a Summilux-M 5 75 f1.4. As Australias most successful portrait photographer sums it up, Sony is just a small colour photocopier for the flat and characterless images it takes.

Waited ages for the GFX100 II and then massively disappointed to find they put it in a little body. Much preferred the first one & not going to buy a camera at that price point that I don’t enjoy handling.

It should not be downplayed the quality of Jordan's shots on this one. Especially the radio tower coming perfectly out of the hand rail, while simultaneously framing Chris perfectly in the frame created by the building architecture behind him.
