but i thought she is vietnamese?? and base her artystyle on anime, manga, manhwa way of drawing. I dont see how these principles are made by white western people, while realism, which is heavly based on ancient greek and on western eauropean arstyle never had this weird rule she uses... it was completly different it was showing people as they are without any ekhem.... as she said.... yassification. To be honest today artstyles are heavly based on Eastern Asian media... They also had their own art. White western people did not created the rules for art first.

Thank you for covering this girly, I'm now currently going into uni so getting super serious with my anatomy ect. And ive found that there is a certain 'ideal' figure and overall anatomy prefrence that a lot of professional/popular artists use which comes out as extremely bias. Its a little concerning that a lot of beginner artists think that learning these prefrenced anatomy's are enough and it ends up with a large majority of individuals who draw characters mainly sticking to (and we have to admit it) the anatomy of white/western people.

You reminded me to continue with my journey and study all types of bodies, races, sex ect. I dont want to be stuck in what is currently the anatomy norm of the Internet and I hope a lot more artists also drift away from it. <3

I think the only issue with the original drawing was the eye placement. It’s a bit too far back. Also the neck is slightly too long.

This is why I dont ever watch the videos from people who only seem do draw portraits of pretty, idealized versions of people from one specific race. I always check their insta to see if they draw the same face 500 times.

Off topic social experiment, don’t comment if you don’t want to get controversial

If I were to identify as a black person would I get to have a say in this controversy?

I think a really big fear of mine that scares me from drawing more POC is doing it wrong. As someone who draws in anime style and is a self taught hobbyist, it's hard to figure out which tutorials are helpful and which are not. I've seen people get torn apart for drawing different body types or facial features wrong, for coloring a character's skin too light/ashy/wrong(color undertones is what they meant i think??) and the easiest way for me to not get in trouble is to avoid it altogether, which is a problem in and of itself.

This is the best vid i saw abt this, all the other vids I saw were only vids hating on her not wven bothwring to point where is she wrong, calling her racist when sometimes she's not even racist, just wrong, I swear, i don't understand why hate vids exist, they are so damn unecessary and harmful for the person who is hated on. I am not specifically talking about this Kooleen case, but generally. Good vid.💪💪💪

Tbh whatever her intent was is, at this point, irrelevant. Because while i dont think she's racist, i do think her actions are very baffling. Not only did they tell her the comment was racist and she ignored it, she also flat out tried to erase the problem all together with a half baked apology, a video about a "uh oh oopsie, youre right, there are other guidelines to use", and still not addressing the gorilla comment. Smh

Hello!! I was the person who asked if you could make a video on this. I've now realized that I called her racist and I don't think that she is racist anymore. She made some very bad actions and wording and when I made that comment my judgement was clouded because I watched a video of someone calling her racist so I just agreed with them but I definitely think that the actions were pretty bad and ignorant.

😭 You're a new creator I've found, and I've taken quite a liking to you so I'm scrolling through your page!

Not in a weird way like I'm a young artist 😭 I have no complaints about this video, I enjoy your opinions and how you present them in a very non-offensive way, and explain of the people fairly!

Only complaint I have is I'm blind as heck, and can't see the apology in the beginning lol (that I'll look up myself of course 😂)

But thank you, as another POC artist to come out and talk about this, as a Kooleen fan, and a teenage black mixed girl, it caused uncomfortable feelings.

I got over my skin issues well ago, a story not necessary to bring up, but it was despicable in a sense.

But like I said, I appreciate your opinions and share them!
Keep it up, and I hope you have a great day if you see this!

❤❤❤

Try putting that template on a white person and you'll see it's the same thing as with a black person,
No human face is perfectly flat,
You're a race grifter trying to be offend,
I'm a black guy and I put the time into checking if that rule works on other faces and it doesn't in most cases,
White and black people have huge chins myself include,
It's just a style choice.

Kooleen is a wonderful artist, but she does draw in a specific style and specific way— and although she had the best intention it ultimately made her look insensitive. I’m hoping she’ll take a moment to reconsider and understand why what she did was kind of ignorant and came off as racist and grow in the future. It’s so easy to dive in head first and brand a content creator as racist when in reality she’s probably not actually racist and just a little oblivious about the implications of her advice.

Listening to your personal experiences brought me to tears. It’s heartbreaking to think that so many people are made to feel that way about themselves.
I think this is why learning to properly represent all the different kinds of beautiful people in the world is so important.

I’m still learning so I consume as much content as I can around the representation of POC in art, Your insight was really helpful.

On a side note I’d really encourage fellow artists to put the time into studying different skin tones, face shapes and body types.
It can be scary to begin with but it’s too important to ignore.

This really just goes to show that a lot of big online artists don't actually know what they're talking about. (Or they're just blatantly ignoring it because the don't care, they're racist, ect...)

It's annoying though, because teaching people to be this rigid when studying art causes those who take the advice to form bad habits (like same face syndrome) and can lead to even worse beauty standards for everyone else in the real world.
And honestly, the picture she "fixed" looked worse in my opinion after she touched it. The head wasn't even turned up anymore, she widened the eye for some reason, making the character look more surprised rather than the cool, calm, relaxed look of the before and didn't even focus on anything outside the face. Like, the racism aside, it was flat out bad advice. The only correct thing she advised, in my opinion, was to move the eye.
