Good video but a few points. With proper skill you don't have to rely on chance of random spinning. No spin is an effective technique up to about 10 meters perhaps even more depending on skill level. And throwing knives are very effective against chainmail with video evidence. Penetrated 2 layers of thick chainmail, 3-4 inches of meat, and still sticking into the wood backing behind the meat and chainmail. Good video don't get me wrong, but you should do a little more research.

Similar to the conclusions you came to, I think throwing knives are a useful tool for distraction in a fight, especially in a one-versus-many situation. If you're about to cross swords with a dude and you see his buddy coming from the side, you can chuck one out quickly as a sort of "no you don't" to stop them for a moment to give you some breathing room.

He's throwing from what appears to be pretty far, or too far in my opinion for throwing knives. I think the most effective range is anywhere from like 6-15 feet. Forget about dodging and not enough power at that range. I don't think throwing knives were ever meant to be a primary weapon, they've always been intended as more of a sidearm / distraction. About to get in a sword fight? Be sneaky and when still out of range of their sword quickly draw and throw a knife, they either have to parry or attempt a dodge, either way they're occupied doing this and you can move in for a lethal strike with your sword or primary weapon. Another use is if you're losing a fight and retreating, take a knife and turn around and quickly throw it at the opponent.

You have now inspired a mage character who uses throwing knives. On hitting the target, the knives return to the wielder, and his mage abilities would allow him to imbue the knives with various status effects.

I would never argue a throwing knife is a primary weapon. And I think to suggest it should be compared to primary weapons does not make sense to me. Sorry but referencing a fictional character is not a legitimate reason to do so. Which is what you did when you put up a picture of Jason Statham in this video. I would argue that the use of a throwing knife would be more of a secondary weapon, or a weapon used for certain specific purposes. I also think that the idea someone would be able to put their arm up when seeing a throwing knife in a full combat situation seems a bit of a stretch because they would probably be already engaging someone in combat when it comes at them especially when no one wants to get cut. But lets say someone did but up an arm to stop a throwing knife. If that arm is not armored then it is a 50/50 chance you just damaged their good arm that is attached to your sword hand. Sure they could switch hands with the sword if they have time, but it would put them at a huge disadvantage because it is not their strong arm. Dodging sounds legitimate. However I think if someone were to lead with a throwing knife it would be in a surprise situation not as a distraction, but as a way of making a silent kill. Like when you are taking out someone while trying to sneak into somewhere like a strong hold or castle quietly. As for knives being one use I am not sure how you came up with that idea, because I believe that you could retrieve them from a target should you get a kill, or after the fighting is done if you knew where you threw them. I don't deny the physics of a bow or a cross bow seem to be better especially if you compare range, but just like a throwing knife require decent amount of training too and an arrow cannot be retrieved easily once it is logged into a body because of the shape of the tip and they have a better chance of being damaged because their body is made out of wood. You make comments about people wearing armor I cannot deny, but if you consider that most arrow shots were fired into the air so they would build speed on the drop they not only could be seen coming but also could be blocked with a shield and certain types of armor. And I think you still ignore that a knife can be used in a close combat situation for stabbing your opponent. It is one of the reasons combat knives are still issued to militaries. Yes they are used for survival purposes, but militaries still teach hand to hand techniques because the situation could come up and at times would be useful for quiet insertions of the battlefield.

I’m surprised that I’m almost halfway through the video and it hasn’t been brought up that they’re potentially fantastic assassination tools. Not because they kill on hit, but because of their ability to knick a target’s skin in most instances that they’re thrown, which is a great way to administer a poison at longer ranges. They’re also great assassination tools because, as pointed out, they’re great knives in general, and assassins will more often than not be dealing with unarmored targets, which are prime real estate for something like a throwing knife.

Long story short, good assassination weapon that’s easy to conceal and administer poison with, but not great for war scenarios or open fights.

For a heavy throwing knife that doubles as a big survival knife, check out the Tru-Bal Bowie Axe. They have been around since 1949, and have seen service in Vietnam. Mostly used as a big bruiser of a blade, but can be used as a heavy thrower as well.

Shad. In my boffer community we had a rogue who used to use throwing knives. He used to be a baseball pitcher before boffer and he could throw like 90 miles an hour.
He had to stop using them entirely because even the boffers were terrifying at mid range. There was a broken nose and a cut forehead at separate points.
I would be afraid of a throwing knife in that man's hands.

As a dedicated battlefield weapon, they would seem laughable. However, as a weapon of someone for "street fighting", self defense or something similar, certainly.
They have utility and versatility, even for non combat things, like cutting your food, gutting game animals you hunted, carving wood, or anything else you might want a knife for. Then you just add a throwing potential with very few sacrifices. It might be less optimal for a specific task if it's shaped for throwing, but not dramatically worse for most generic knives.
As a weapon, it has alternate uses, such as being an offhand weapon, distraction, or dual weilding them if you lost a primary weapon. They may not be as good at parrying as a parrying dagger, but they can help someone defend against a blade a little bit.
I can picture someone at war using them but 95% of the time it's for utility around a campsite, traveling, or for fun, and 4.9% of the time on the hip as a backup weapon, and .1% of the time actually being used in combat. I highly doubt such a person would keep more than 2-4 such throwing knives on themselves, assuming they were lightweight.
A plumbata might be handy, but it's bulky by comparison.

You mentioned the main thing about thrown weapons they are not good main weapons but there brother is where experience is diferent from theory ☺ my grandfather teached me here in Brazil to throw weapons since my 4 years old and first I was disapointed by the eficience of them like you I concluded they are not lethal 😂 far from truth in time I discover that throw knives and other weapons are a essential skill like he told me ☺ the thing is like you say a gun is more eficient so is a bow BUT I for exemple use a gun a rifle as my main weapon a machete as my melee weapon and a knive as a reserve weapon 😂 I know looks like a lot but thats the thing you can use any number of weapons as you want but if you learn to throw weapons properly you can use ANY melee weapon as a range weapons ☺ I too use shirikens I trained ninjutsu but I honest prefer knives for theyr versatility and thats the point it takes a LOT of tranining to master to throw blades I trained 30 years in comparison I master to throw a spear in 1 year ☺ but the reward is much greater today I m capable to put a kitchen knife in a door at 5 meters with no efort and the amunition is all around 😂 thanks for the video and sorry for the enourmous coment brothers.
