The Christian Spaniards are the genetic descendents of the original builders of the structure when it was a pagan temple. After their descendents converted to Christianity, it was still in their possession and they converted it into a cathedral. The cathedral ruins the inside. Even Charles V regretted his decision to give the Christians permission to build a cathedral inside. I just came back from there, and the majority of the tourists are left admiring the Muslim architecture, not the dark gothic halloween style design of the Christians.
