When our tongue sits on the roof of the mouth it creates a "clasp" effect on our upper and lower jaw. What this does is tether the two together, creating a mouth that is sealed with pressure in it. When we have a pressurized airway as children, the tongue is always pushing the upper jaw forward and up. The tongue creates a scaffolding effect, ensuring our upper jaw stays supported and our cheeks stay sealed, ensuring we stay mouth breathers . This low level constant pressure of the tongue pushing forward and up, and the pressure in our sinuses ensures we maximize expansion of our airway by the time we're 18. Without this, we have smaller upper jaws which means smaller noses, making it harder to breathe well especially when we sleep. The other major factor is making sure by the time we're 18 that we aren't stuck with an adult tongue trapped within a child size jaw, which many people are stuck with and wonder why they have breathing issues.

When our tongue stays clasped, and our jaw is sealed, we are left with our mouth being like a pressurized balloon. The bigger our jaw size, the bigger the balloon. Our mouth and nose work like a pump. As we go to inhale, we press our tongues against the roof of the mouth. The harder I can press forward with a sealed jaw, the more air I can inhale through the nose. The more you can take in, the easier it is to stay breathing through your nose, even if you have allergies. When our upper jaw is small, that means we have a smaller nasal cavity. This is critical when it comes to sleep because as we get into deeper levels of sleep, everything relaxes and if our nose can't move enough air with ease, we are left with all kinds of sleep disordered breathing. During the day, if we have small noses and don't breath well, we can turn to mouth breathers over time, creating all kinds of issues affecting our health.
