I guess they’ve got to balance the demand for their batteries between cars, meggapacks and power walls 😊

There is a huge push toward gigantic wind turbines that can be towed to sea and anchored several miles out in deep water. As solar and wind farms continue to grow the need for utility scale storage will soar, this bodes very well for Megapack facilities connected to those renewable farms.

I think we should say that the megapacks at Austin will stabilize electricity not only for Tesla, but quite a bit also also for the surrounding area.

The relatively small amount of panels will help a little, but I doubt it would produce enough for that many megapacks.

Can you dig in a little on that? I heard you need a megapack with each set of chargers, sometimes more than one megapack is needed.

I expect your headline will be the added stability to Austin grid.

I don’t think Tesla solar roof is a solved product. Probably needs to be a lot better/cheaper to go prime time.

So, my problem with Tesla and the Grid Storage business, which is what these magapacks are for, thanks a lot for not saying anything about these things (sarcasm), is lithium can only be produced so fast. Using it for grid storage is TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It takes up too much of the production in a given year of lithium, and instead of being able to make BEV, you're making grid storage which can EASILY be made with units that have no lithium or even any rare earth material. Grid storage doesn't have to be energy dense.

One of the better solutions is Redox technology which doesn't use rare earth materials or lithium.

LFP IS better than Li-Ion, but still. There are too many BEVs that need to be made to waste lithium in this way.

So no it doesn't make me happy and anyone who's delved into ALL the issues that humans are going to have to deal with to make a transition to BEV realizes the amount of electric production needs to grow, MASSIVELY. So, a LOT of grid storage and a LOT of BEV needs to be made. See how using lithium for both kind of defeats what you're trying to do?

Now, Elon Mush doesn't care about any of this. He cares about making money and going to Mars. He's not the best person to be glorifying or engaging in idol worship over.

Energy arbitrage, Autobidder and virtual power plants, offer follow-on revenues. It all looks very good.

If they can get enough batteries.

Geopolitical shenanigans could get in the way. We shall see.

Those 'service' contracts with VPP/VMM software can be used with other manufacturers battery packs, so just like FSD, will eventually become a service/leasing profit-center(...$) Little difference between Blackrock's 'assets-under-management' and Tesla's growing portfolio of 'energy-under-management'. "How many kWh's in your wallet"(?)

Regarding solar roof, Tesla would be better suited to leave the design and installations to other smaller businesses... local businesses.

Is any of this tech exportable? Two car carriers on the high seas destroyed and billions lost due to thermal runaway on lithium batteries. Is the tech really safe? Is it insurable?

I wonder what the Hate Stream Media BS will be based upon to discredit Tesla's energy business or maybe they won't bother because energy companies do not produce huge advertising revenue for them like Ford, GM etc do. Great video Jon, thank you.

The megapack in 2021 is not the same product as now. We have megapack v2 now, which uses LFP and should be more manufacturable.

Each megapack is worth thousands of cars, requires less sales effort for the same income, has a strong economic as well as functional benefit to the end customer, so essentially recession proof. And growing at a rate it will catch up with auto by revenue by 2032 or so. So essentially doubling the size of the company in the background away from most analysts eyes at present.

Once Tesla starts making in the billions in energy profits which should happen in 2 years, Wall Street is going to take TSLA to $1000 per share.

We are in a tesla news black hole at the moment, really not a lot happening, but you always seem to find something new to show us. While most other chanels show us the same two or three bits of nit much.

Goid job 😊

Battery supply is going to be still an interesting problem. After all, a Megapack is sort of similar to a big flashlight. It is the packaging, necessary peripherals, and especially the excellent control software that add value and make Tesla products super competitive. Consider that it was reported recently (by Electrify) than new Powerwalls (with a backup switch) can be installed about 20 times faster than previous ones. Installations of Megapacks (like at Giga-Texas) certainly seem to move along quickly as well. With evolving improvements like those, good margins for the foreseeable future would seem assured.

There will also be factories in China and others.

You might have discussed how revenue is recognized. It’s not the same as a car delivery. Thus mega packs produced are far greater due to the delay. There are likely an increasing stream of revenue because the lag maybe 6 months. It would be interesting to understand more about average install milestone times.

John, if Elon is aiming at 500GWH megapacks production where is the electricity generation going to come from? Is there enough solar panels, wind turbines or other green energy sources to charge the megapacks? Or is he relying on customers to supply the energy and he just provides storage?

Tesla solar was and is a joke with sky high LCOE compared to industry leaders. It's more of a cloak for the buyout of solarcity and lifeline to his cousins than a real product.
