Long live Greece. Land of the righteously indignant and the real home of the brave. Its soil is soaked in the blood and sacrifices of its sons and daughters throughout the ages.

Why were war heroes executed after war? Because communists revealed their true colours. Just like everywhere else, communists tried to use occupation as a means to get to power. They would garner support of people who saw them fighting invaders but after occupation ended they would attack anyone else who is threat to their claim to power and launch a civil war or mass executions. Happened in China, happened in Yugoslavia and also it happened in Greece.

Interesting how everyone agrees that Italian occupation was the best one. In Yugoslavia there were actually clashes between Italians and Croatians as Italians had sent the army to protect Serbian civilians from butchering. They considered people in occupied territory their new citizens and thus felt that it was their duty to protect them. Mussolini also refused for the long time to discriminate against the Jews and longer still to hand them over to Germans.

Partisans in Greece were more humane I see. In Yugoslavia it was 100 Serbs for 1 killed German...and communists kept attacking Germans anyhow. Important factor was that partisans acted in territories they didnt come from so they knew that their family will not be affected by reprisals.

A fun fact many do not know;
In Greece there is a place called Mount athos, or the Holy Mountain.
The Archbishop, priests and monks had actually written a letter to hitler, asking him not to plunder the monasteries and instead become its protector.
He agreed, and i believe the letter still exists today in the monasteries vaults amongst hundreds of artifacts and icons.

Their is a documentary on mount athos which mentioned it.

I am Greek. I have spoken to many elderly people who lived these events. Most of the documentaries and movies are propaganda. The greeks didn't suffer because of the Germans. They suffered because of the Communists. And you portrait them in this video as saviours. They are criminals! Most greeks hate the Communists to this day. They were really bad people, stealing animals, money and even children from greek homes. Yes they were greek as well, but criminals.

I remember my Grandmother telling my her cousin was deaf in one ear because of the Nazis. He, a little kid at the time, went to pick up some bread from the ground in their village and a German soldier hit him in the ear with the butt of his rifle and ruptured his ear drum.

It is important to note that Greeks exhausted all their resources fighting the Italians. When the Germans invaded, 200 000 Greek reserves did not even have boots, clothes, or food to be sent to the front. Germans did not achieve victory on the battlefield due to their military prowess, but due to Greece's poverty.

Out of a population of 7 million, Greece lost over 800 000.
300 000 at least were the victims of starvation in Athens alone during the winter of 1942.

So for me this sound like Greek was a somewhat milder version of what Poland went taught in WW2minus the starvation part not that is was not a problem in Poland but it was easier to procure food with stealing and forests and what not, certainly Greeks put much less resistance on their side

Honestly tho everyone should be gardening in cemetaries. To think about this: Greek population was around 7 million then. EAM at its peak numbered 1,5 million members. More than 20% of the population got involved in the resistance. EDES was very much smaller, with only some tens of thousand members.

I want to say something about the Kalavryta massacre. The 77 German POWs who got executed were initially planned to be traded with Greek resistance POWs. There were even some talkings but the Germans didn't want to trade prisoners, just to take theirs back. There were some Greek "lords" who tried to calm down both sides. Finally, the negotiations failed and the Germans tried to release the POWs violently. The Greek resistance figthers initially tried to retreat with the POWs but they reached a point where they could not continue carrying them. So, the leadership of the rebels ordered that team to execute the POWs. The team didn't want to do that so they got replaced by another team who finally executed the prisoners.

Fun fact: one of the Greek prisoners that the resistance tried to trade was Nikos Zahariadis, the secretary of the Communist Party of Greece who was imprisoned even before the German occupation by the Greek state. Zahariadis is the most historical secretary of the Communist Party, was a supporter of Joseph Stalin. After the Greek Civil War, he ended in USSR and after the death of Stalin, the Khruschev regime sent him to Siberia where he stayed until his death in 1971.

The truth is that the Germans never paid for the damages, destructions, thefts and murders of innocents they committed in Greece. Their time will come.
