In the county I was born in, carteret county in NC, there were two brothers that didn’t want to sell their family land to a developer and spent 7+ year in jail under a contempt of court. 7 years with no charge, just a judge trying to break these men and they finally were let out maybe a year ago.

Perhaps leasing the property to land developers for 100 years or more would benefit the Gullah Geechee Nation.

Grew up spending summers on John’s island with my family and the reason I loved being there is because it felt like a land removed from time in a way. As time goes on it’s getting more and more like Hilton head and it really makes me sick to my stomach. During reconstruction and the early 1900s white folk let us buy the land nobody wanted and now they’re circling like buzzards to get it back.

If you know American African History you know that the black Seminoles are the Gullah Africans that decided to stay here, although quite a few of them, a majority, did return to Africa! Vegetables such as corn, collard greens are not grown in any parts of the continent of Africa. They were never West Africans...they from the Carribian Islands!

Has anyone ever placed restrictive covenants on the property that would make it undesirable for development? A restrictive covenant could prevent development.

I can't imagine being the 10th generation to never leave town. Never go to the city. Not go college and make something in a career. Small towns are great. But do you (I am black) really wanna stay there forever? As a young adult? Like 15th generation? My family is from everywhere. Do you really want to hold on to a tradition that's probably improvised because it got lost in translation after 300 years of slavery? You wanna live in the land they never could leave? Wouldn't it be better to.... Leave and do what they couldn't....?

The families are selling it isnt being taken from them and it isnt due to anything but people seeing money and having mo true care about past lives and history they have the same greed they claim the white man too.

Can they get deeds drawn up to legally protect these lands? This is nothing short of a travesty.

So basically no one individual owned the land they lived on is what I'm hearing 😢. Which makes it easier to sell off.
