You would think a hot comic with say, 5 signatures would be a hot seller. But think of the cost for those signatures. If you wind up discounting the book because it's not moving you can lose a lot.

Much respect on this video! You’re always putting out quality content and just content that can better the community rather than putting out false narratives like a lot of these other “content creators” keep up the great work!

Great video James and very helpful. I'm starting to unload some of my 17,000 plus collection in order to fund getting some bigger keys and these tips help! I'll be in Jersey next month for a few weeks and will definitely stop by your shop. Me and a buddy of mine have bought from your claim sales before and would love to meet you at some point!

Great pointers. I only send to cgc something that is at least $200-$300. Anything less is really not worth it. Good point about high end books.

This was a great video, thank you for sharing your insights. The one thing I discovered selling books is that like you stated certain books do sell just off the cover artist alone even if it is a non key. But what I also discovered is certain books tend to sell more than others, for example I normally don't have a problem selling Spider-Man or Star Wars books (especially the Star Wars books) those just tend to always sell. The other thing I also noticed is that some times what helps you sell is complete sets over individually listed books. I had a bunch of Star Wars the High Republic books that were not selling and then I started making lots (like an issues 1-15 set) and they started getting a lot of views and individuals watching them and then they were selling pretty quickly. Thanks again for the great content.

Your asking $2k for Astonishing Tales #13 9.8 signed? Last sale for the book in 9.8 unsigned was $1580 in 2022 at the height of the boom. You think the signature is worth 500+???

Agree 100% on what you said on certain artists. I don’t collect anyone specially but if I see a njce cover priced right by someone like Ross, hughes, etc that’s a $5-15 buy I make on impulse all the time.

Only way you win on a book like that signed man thing is if you score it for a bargain. I had a similar book was a 9.8 run filler but because I got for cheap enough I was happy to sell for the profit I did (spent $70 all in and because it got the 9.8, I was happy with $400 even if it was maybe worth a bit more technicaally)

I love variants. But, holy moly, some of them are crazily expensive. I just buy them to have them. And I usually have a limit on what i spend per book.

I’ve really clamped down on signature series submissions for the reasons you listed. It narrows the market for the book too much, and it’s made it harder for me to move certain books that probably would have done much better raw or as blue label slabs.

Great video James, my question for you is that I have 5 short boxes of keys and iconic covers and only about 10 books are graded and I would to grade all my keys but I feel like it's a waste of money cause I could use that money to get more books plus CGC keeps raising there prices which doesn't help.

Awesome video, love the new editing (if it is not new, I apologize). I would say that signature books definitely don't move as well for me, and I was happy to see you call out some artists names that move crazy quick. I'd also point out that some books just deserve to be graded if they are above a five or so, mainly books prior to 1965 in common character runs. Love your content and have for at least a year. Congrats on the new child and I wish you and your wife the best.

Variant covers - I would only buy a variant cover if it was a key issue AND IF the variant cover featured a first appearance of some new character(s) in which cover A may not feature.
This would be for speculation.

You said "in a world where the average comic is worth 10 cents" --- That should be your key message right there. Some comics are worth more as kindling than as a collectible.

Check out the article by Shawn Surmick of Reserved Investments about the optimal collecting grade. He defines this as "the grade at which a third-party graded collectible can be purchased that is a steep discount from a collectible that is one grade above it." So basically if there's a steep jump in FMV from 9.0 to 9.2, some buyer will be afraid to pay that premium and worry about losing value on the 9.2 later. Meanwhile a smaller increase in value from the 8.5 to 9.0 might convince a buyer to make the jump and invest up a grade. This sweet spot minimizes risk and volunteering hopefully keeps your investment close to the demand.
