New MediaTek Dimensity 8300 - Good Enough to Steal the Mainstream Crown?

It is upper midrange. I hope the dimensity 7300 launching next year will compete with the 7 gen3 for the price category

I really enjoy running Asahi Linux for Apple Silicon on my M1 Mac Mini; it wipes the floor with my Intel-based Mac Mini running Debian 12. The Mac MIni's physical format is just right for my needs, so I very much look forward to running an ARM version of Linux on either this Dimensity 8300 or even a Snapdragon of some description. I'm not picky, and I'm sure either one would vastly outrun my ancient Intel-based Mac Mini as well.

So SD7Gen3 might be cheap Mainstream...

In my experience the number of transistors tends to correlate with performance. So I generally don't have to try to keep track of the differing types and numbers of cores just the transistor count.

I love how Mediatek keep the old SoC setup..4 big cores and 4 efficiency cores..yeah it is not as powerful as Apple A bionic SoC but the efficiency is superb and it also can keep performance for long duration..

Its gonna be intresting to see the performance delta between this and the Dimensity 9300. I still can't wrap my head around the monster CPU Setup on the 9300.

Regardless of how good Mediatek SOCs get, I wouldnt touch them with a ten foot pole. 😂
Until they start actually start embracing the developer community and start supporting their hardware, their SOCs are essentially just for people who dont know any better and who are comfortable having their hardware just supported for one or two official generations of manufacturer software.

Ya know, for all the public emphasis on "reusability" and "environmental / climate consciousness", the top brass do seemingly go out of their way to implement their planned obsolescence schemes.

What is it with ARM CPUs and their weird core setups. 1 fast, 3 just as fast in real life, but clocked a percent or two lower, then 4 small and slow cores. I bet the faster core is only there for marketing, because nobody can tell the difference between 3ghz and 3.3ghz. But anyway, this thing embarrasses that nasty Snapdragon!

They released D8300 to rival SD7+G2 which is a legendary chipset with exceptional performance, and I have to say, i have really high hopes on Mediatek if the real world performance is as good as 7+G2. Looking at Qualcomm now, they wont be releasing any follow-up product for a long time, its a perfect time to steal the spotlight. Just a few things they need to take care of, driver updates, compatibility and devs support.

OK, ARM need to free the gpu drivers so mali devices (samsung and mediatek) could get fixes in some softwares.

I'm curious, will Xiaomi use the 8300 with the Ultra variant for the Xiaomi 14T next year? I know the 8200-Ultra isn't out of date, but with Xiaomi's commitment to providing 4 years of Android support, I think the A78 and A55 will be slow to handle Android 17

This chipset is too powerful for midrange. Believe it or not, some brand quietly ignore this chipset in the product proposal meeting and choose other cheaper/slower options to not cannibalize their existing midrange market.

I expect no more than 3 models to be launched in 2024 with this chipset, the brands are more likely to choose D1300, D1200 or D8200.
