My slave ancestors lived in Caroline County, Henry and Patrick County, Va. My slave Great Great Grandmother died at the age of 55, with the saddest countenance I had ever seen. Who knows how many of her children were sold away from her? Married to a man that they made her “breed” with. I saw the big house that her mistress grew up in. Huge, beautiful mansion, even by today’s standards. God knows what my Great Great Grandmother had to endure.

In the Southern colonies, attempts to establish a "landed gentry" class was largely successful. Only those with a level of wealth through land and chattel couls participate in local government: holding office and voting. This started in the 1600s. Slowly, small farmers were legislated off their lands and into the Foothills and swamps. It wasn't until 1825 that the US federal government passed universal sufferage for all white males regardless of income, superceding the Southern laws.

In Africa, people made textiles, forged iron, preserved food, wove baskets, built buildings, planted and harvested, herded stock. The only thing they learned here was how white people did those things.
