One of the best explanations I’ve found is that you have to look at the US as the new Roman Empire. We are the global hegemony. The US dollar is the world’s reserve currency that allows for the exercise of “soft power” all over the world. Then you pair that with our “hard power” of the military. It is crazy. No country in history, other than the US has been able to win two wars at the same time. Both in WW2 with the European and Pacific theaters as well as Iraq and Afghanistan (the definition of “win” in the Middle East is certainly debatable). Look into the comparisons some more it makes a lot of sense to me and helps explain a lot of our foreign policy.

Fixing America's political quagmire is not impossible; compulsory voting would devastate the lobby system that has corrupted its politicians, give voice to the whole nation and engender cohesion rather than tribalism. Voting is a duty to protect democracy. Nations that practice it have a 90% plus turnout, which isn't really accounted for by the token fines ($50 in Australia). Governments have a true mandate instead of the support of 25% or so.
However, we expect the school shootings to continue because freedom from fear is far less important that the right gun fantasies.
