For me, the action is the juice
Ответитьwould Gareth Edward's, The Creator be considered a Vibes movie? I feel like yes.
ОтветитьVibes movies are great but sadly Tenet was ugly depressing vibes
ОтветитьWatching this in 2024 and Oppenheimer is Nolan hot again
ОтветитьEven if i understood 100% of the movie, the movie would still suck 100%
ОтветитьRidley Scott has made some of my favourite vibes films, even if the sci-fi ones don't fit all the criteria you lay out here. When I think of 'Blade Runner', or want to watch it again, it's to go visit that world, to walk in those lonely shoes and eat greasy street noodles in a trench coat while soaked in smoke and neon and rain. 'Alien', which I just watched again recently, has one of the thinnest "plots" of any film, but it's such a gritty atmospheric experience - you can feel the cynical camaraderie of the crew like they working on a cargo ship or a submarine, yet it's still a very unique, otherly / futuristic world that they all inhabit. 'Ghost In the Shell' (the original anime) is another sci-fi vibe. Similarly to 'Blade Runner', the plot is basically about moving the main characters through sequences of gathering and processing information that serves them up an existential quandary, roll credits. But damn, the long shots of city life, the lights, the rain, the solitude. What a vibe.
One Ridley Scott that might fit your criteria (though it's been years since I watched it) is 'Hannibal'. I remember Julianne Moore absolutely nailing the Jaded Detective role of Starling a decade after her experience in 'Silence Of the Lambs'. Plus it felt lifted, expensive, glamorous, delicious. I don't remember the plot or the story, I just remember feeling afterward that I really wanted to put on an expensive suit and dine at a fancy restaurant. Similarly to Nolan, Scott isn't afraid to leave romance out as a driving factor and instead lean heavily on someone just being damn good at their job, but first immersing you into a richly-felt 'vibe'. (I would guess that's due to him coming up through commercials, where you need to sell a feeling before anyone speaks.)
Thanks for the video, I'm progressively entering a watching tunnel of your channel, and I really liked the idea you brought up here.
I'd make a case for John Wick movies being "vibe" movies as well. The plot isn't what matters, the McGuffin is most often a form of revenge, which, in and of itself, is fairly empty, and John is always in motion, in glamorous and/or mysterious places. The overarching notion of "the continentals" or "the high table" serves its purpose without too much elaboration, and the real highlights of the movie are the "concept" action scenes (the mirror fight, the pool fight, the night club fight..s and so on). Of course John himself is tortured and his relationships with his very rare "friends" in this world feel far more meaningful than any he might have with a woman, being a widower to whom getting over his dead wife isn't part of any propsective character development.
The fourth installment in the series especially felt like the purest version of its concept, with any form of excess fat removed to make way for the "John wick vibes" : chat scenes between john's clique of hard-boiled guys, extremely well-choreographed fight scene in a surrealistic environment, high-table mumbo-jumbo in high-class settings, repeat. I loved it, even while going crazy over the inconsistencies, it felt so perfected at what it was doing that I was willing to forgive any other gripes I had.
Anyways, those were my two-cents, keep^doing what you're doing, it's great.
interstellar also qualifies as a vibes movie n that it doesn't make sense
ОтветитьReally which you mentions Jack Reacher here...
ОтветитьI was in the theater on opening night along with my son and a stranger. When that line was spoken, I heard it as instruction from Nolan and I complied. I also complained about the unintelligible dialog to the manager and was given free tickets which I used to watch the film again a couple of days later. That's when I realized it was intentionally unintelligible.
ОтветитьTenet and bunch of stupid people too embarassing to admit movie is trash and there is no way to get it
ОтветитьFanboys approached the movie as an IQ test, but we're just meant to experience it. Tony Scott and Wong Kar Wai, both very different filmmakers, but both made immersive movies. Movies to be experienced.
ОтветитьI’ve been a huge fan of the Miami Vice remake since day one. But all I encountered was hate. Glad to see it get the recognition it deserves, for the right reason. QUESTION: Would you put John Wick in this category?
Ответитьwhile I appreciate what you're saying... HOW you're saying it is the reasoning people use to claim that J.J.Abrams is a good writer, so I cannot agree.
ОтветитьRecently discovered your channel and really loving it. I've enjoyed every video of yours so far, great job! I'm sure i'll end up binging until i've seen everything you've done here. Thanks for the get content!
ОтветитьEmma's character such great comic relief. You guys build such great pacing into the video essays. I'd compliment other stuff here... but then what would i write on the next video??
Ответитьsooo... Fast and Furious are VIBES MOVIES?
ОтветитьMichael Mann's Black Hat ia also a vibe movie that no one else seems to like but me. Lol
ОтветитьTenet has momentum? Moving from scene-to-scene while leaving the audience in the dust is not momentum. Momentum means mass * velocity. Momentum is being propelled in the same direction. The audience never knows where Tenet is going. Backward. Forward. Left. Right. Up. Down. Without a fixed starting point the audience can't detect the direction or sense a destination. Movement alone is not momentum, it's action. Tenet is movement. Tenet is movement towards Dramamine.
ОтветитьTenet is terrible. The aesthetics peak at Elizabeth Debicki in tailored outfits. You like the vibe from some concrete box lit blue or red? Or the vibe from the movie's yellow tint? Nope. I like aesthetics. Black Narcissus. The Red Shoes. Suspiria. I can be captivated by the wardrobe, color, or framing of shots. Kim Novak at the Golden Gate Bridge in Vertigo -- beautiful. Tenet -- a dusty desert where unknown army men in green ran somewhere for some reason. Tenet is aesthetically mediocre, has a nearly impenetrable plot, and is acted out by characters who we care almost nothing about. Terrible is Tenet.
ОтветитьSubaru went from WRC champions to a car brand with 'Good Vibes". You might be on to something.
ОтветитьIve always loved this movie since the beginning. I argue with my friends about it all the time. To me this was Nolans "Video Game" movie. Unnamed protagonist who's good at literally everything. Strings of fun, crunchy and almost tactile action scenes with constant McGuffin chasing to push the plot to next moment. Completely thin side characters that the protagonist meets once or twice to pick up their mission who are basically NPCs.... This just screams action video game to me and I love it.
ОтветитьYaaaas.
ОтветитьTL dl : turn off your brain and just don't think about it, basically it's a more sophisticated transformers
ОтветитьHaving just watched Finchers The Killer, I’d add this to the list too.
ОтветитьBTW The Rock is the best James Bond movie.
ОтветитьThis is why Donnie Darko was the background of my anxiety teenage life and was pretty much watched on repeat for two years...
ОтветитьVibes are important, but Tenant is hot garbage. Heat check or whatever its what dumb people imagine a smart movie looks like. Absolute nonsense with Easter eggs hidden throughout to try and justify the nonsense. The hammiest performances ever justified by nothing. Nolan is a guy who has half of an idea and hope the audience can come up with the other half. Lazy.
ОтветитьThe problem with Tenet is that it has no Feel at all.
It's as interesting as watching an Ice cube on the northpole who does not want to melt because it's to cold.
So how can you feel this film.
It is stupid as it is overaded.
Is Alphaville a vibes movie?
ОтветитьI have a playlist on Plex called "no sex, no nudity" and my favorite movies are usually found there. Pointless sex scenes are annoying as all hell. Im always shocked to find people like them and I am certainly no prude. 😂
ОтветитьCool vid
ОтветитьWow I was literally thinking of Miami vice during the explanation of vibe movie. Wow
ОтветитьI definitely get the vibes, but Tenet is still the movie that convinced me that I didn't actually like Nolan particularly as a director. He's got great technical skill and gets great performances from actors, but he just comes off very cold to me. I don't really grok with his perspective as a storyteller.
ОтветитьIntro and the Lupin the 3rd reference gets me every time.
ОтветитьImma come in with a counter here “Dick Flicks”
ОтветитьOh my GOOOOD. I felt the last Mission impossible lined up with the Vibes movies definition before you said it.
ОтветитьIf you had explained a Basketball 'heat check' with a moviemaking analogy, I would have understood what a 'heat check' was better.
ОтветитьWas that a Hangman Adam Page reference?
ОтветитьI was HIGHLY Annoyed by the low l and unclear dialogue, but okay, i guess I'll try it again, but only because Patrick suggests that it's 'good' it whatever...
ОтветитьTenet is a film I would expect Alfred Hitchcock to make
ОтветитьI absolutely love Tenet. I wish I could watch it for the first time again, and the second time again, and the third time again. After about the eighth time I finally understood most of the dialogue and the mechanics. Seriously, I still love rewatching it.
ОтветитьNgl that title screams "I didnt understand the plot so it doesnt have any." It's definitely a movie you have to watch at least two times. Try doing that?
ОтветитьI wonder how someone cant follow the plot of this move. You might not like it, might not find it "smart". But the plot of back to the future is more complex than Tenet's one.
Ответить
