I rescued a 6 ft long black rat snake that had fallen down a cave pit in Virginia. It was so cold down there and the snake could barely summon the energy to move. I put it into my backpack, climbed the 120 ft (35m) of rope back up to the top, and released it. Once it warmed up a bit in the sun, it slithered away unharmed!

Great video, thank you!!!! I've always been really fond of black rat snakes as they're among the most common wild snakes where I used to live, but have honestly never considered what they would be like as pets, so this was really cool and informative :)

I say you should redo the corn snake ratings! Also you shouldn't compare them to other animals. PS I have 12 corns and only 1 was spicy as a baby, she outgrew it by around 8 months.

My ball python is getting geriatric (20 years old this august). I’m thinking about what I’ll get next, and I’m thinking a North American snake. Easier to keep the proper temp and humidity since I’m in the American southeast. Rat snake, hog nose, king snake, bull snake, something simple.

I would like to see a video on Japanese Rat snake. Do you think you can make one on them? I always enjoy your video on different spices. I learn a lot every time. as matter of fact, I got my first snake because I saw you introduce Children's python. I never thought I will have a pet snake, but now I have 2. and all started with your video. hahaha

Availability should come with the caveat that, if you live in the south, it's a five. Just go outside. There's one in your back yard, right now.

Thank you for this video! The snake that got me into herps was a Pantherophis obsoletus. Back in the early 90’s, when I was 11 I caught one and kept her for decades! It was really before there were any captive bred snakes available in my area. Back then they were classified as Texas rat snakes. JoJo was a sweet and perfect captive! Amazing animals that will always hold a special place in my heart!

Hello Clint. I just rescued a very docile yearling western rat snake. I decided to keep this sweet snake. So far, this young snake has eaten a hopper mouse once a week. I have had it now for nine weeks. My question is do I need to 😅cool down the enclosure as winter begins to allow the snake to hibernate? I live in hill country of south Texas. The enclosure is in a temperature controlled shop where I keep the temperature around 78 degrees, year round. With that scenario, can I continue to offer food to the rat snake year round? Your expert opinion would be appreciated. Thank you.

Todd

I handled a wild Eastern rat snake once, as it had decided my bedroom was nice and cozy. It was totally unbothered as I gently picked it up and escorted it back outside. If that's anything like the behavior of "tame" rat snakes, then they are indeed greatly suited for being pets.

Today I had to move a western rat snake from my uncle’s porch. Gave me a tiny nip then realized I wasn’t causing any harm and just was a little squirmy wanting to get away. Had the black color but seemed a tad small so probably fairly recently got the full black color. Always love the rat snakes!

I don’t have them as pets but I consider them great neighbors. In 26 years of living in the same house in rural South Carolina I’ve only seen one mouse and he was dead in the garage…These guys do they’re rodent control job perfectly. And a shout out to my Little Brown Bats that have made a come back. Taking care of the mosquito issues. We coexist just fine..

The gray rat snakes also have a melanistic northern form, we have them here in Pennsylvania as well as the eastern rat snakes (in fact, they’re more common here than the easterns). P. obsoletus, P. spiloides, and P. allegheniensis all have black northern populations and are nearly impossible to distinguish, so I just refer to all 3 species as the black rat snake.

When I was a kid, I decided I was old enough to get a pet, and spent the entire summer checking out zoo books and pet manuals from the library to decide which pet I wanted.

I decided I wanted a black rat snake.

It was cool, rather docile, got really big, and they’re black! So I asked my mother if I could get one, and she said I could… for my birthday, which was several months off.

Time passed, and in the meantime my mom came home from the pet store with my sisters and a new cage with some mice. No worries, I bade my time.

When my birthday I was near, I reminded my mother that she told me I could have a black rat snake. My poor mother asked me what black rat snakes ate. I said, “mice.” She said she was sorry but she had to break her promise, because she could not bear to run an apartheid household with mice for pets over here and mice for feeding to the snake over there 😂

We went to the pet store and I ended up with a pet ferret.
