Wow, everyone needs to see this Ted talk
ОтветитьReally cool
ОтветитьThis is the third or fourth time that I'm watching this video. My first social worker told me he knew someone that graduated from UCLA and when I'm all the way down I pull from that and this is the second video that I relate to. I'm in a Re-entry Diversion Program and I believe Restraints are not the solution to assist in giving mentally ill patient like me hope to be able to live a sustainable life! More Push, Less Restraint!
ОтветитьAbsolutely incredible speech
ОтветитьIm chronic paranoid schizophrenic.....my meds are a miracle cure....i am so lucky to be where i am today.....thank you jesus for not forgetting me in my time of need
ОтветитьDid you quit or did you get fired lmfao!
ОтветитьI'm schizophrenic. I'm awesome liked her.
ОтветитьThere definitely needs to be a reform in our courts to stop forced treatment, as she mentions in her speech, the courts solely depend on one person's opinion about another person's well-being. In her case, the doctor labeled her as something she wasn't and checked her into an involuntary hold just because of the prejudice acted towards schizophrenia. The stigma is "if you have schizophrenia, then you are dangerous to yourself and others". I am glad she is changing that stigma and getting the recognition she deserves. It can lead to better care and treatment. Schizophrenia is not the same in any two people diagnosed with the illness; therefore, one treatment that helps one patient may not help another with the same diagnoses. Forced treatment needs to be banned. Thank you Elyn for your book and speech.
ОтветитьMy son just has been diagnose, it's a long road, for them and for the parents... thank you Professor, you give me hope and I understand that the mind needs to learn and stay busy in order to heal, not just medication, they need purpose more than anyone else
ОтветитьPolitical Psy party science class
ОтветитьThank you for your speech
ОтветитьWe need more people to talk bout their experiences. When people are already suffering from mental illness, forcing them and restraining them only makes them feel worse. In my opinion, people with any illnesses especially mental illness, needs peace and love more than anyone. They are suffering already from anxiety, insecurity, depression and etc...with us restraining them we are just making them feel more insecure and anxious.
ОтветитьThat was a very good talk. 😢
ОтветитьI agree with Elyn Saks there needs to be more research for the treatment and cure and treatment of mental illness. I have a 17 year old who suffers from mental illness and it does not only affect the person but the whole family.
ОтветитьShe made a reason for her life
ОтветитьThat was a Powerful Speech
ОтветитьThis country does not provide equal medical care for all people.
In this Capitalist nation, if you have no money, no adequate insurance, no way to pay, you go without or with very minimum care.
Your economic status should not determine whether you receive appropriate treatment or not.
She sounds like an entitled rich narcissist from a rich family who paid for her to go to "psychoanalysis" multiple days each week. I don't trust her stories at all. She plays the part of the mentally ill nerd, which she learned by reading about figures like that waaaaay before she went to law school. What a coincidence that she showed these symptoms when she was asking for an extension on an assignment.
ОтветитьElyn Saks and her husband just both got a glimpse of Chris. Yes, Chris shouldered both their burdens.
ОтветитьThank you.
ОтветитьI agree as a tax payer
I love your book
More TED talks please
I read a book when I was living Raven Hill
I wish I a friend like Stephen
Ellen you are so brave
I always get busted by cops
So we're going to ignore the fact that this is a gay man pretending to be a woman? Maybe that's just another persistent delusion of his.
ОтветитьElyn, the restraints part of your talk made me cry. My dad has LBD and they would restrain him all the time simply because he wasn't making sense. It's always bothered me and I would beg them not to. Our hospitals and treatments are barbaric. People need to know what's done. It's wrong, it doesn't work and it's very cruel. They do it so they don't have to talk with or deal with people struggling while they do other things. My dad would always ask, why, what have I done to deserve this? Yes, indeed they criminalize mental illness and dementia. It breaks my heart. Thanks so much for your talk.
ОтветитьAbsolutely incredible. I have no words
ОтветитьHoorah Elyn.
ОтветитьKeep up the battle!
ОтветитьA very dear friend of mine who I now know to have been developing the expression of schizophrenia in his life. Fully psychotic & in an alcoholic blackout he became aggressively violent & destroyed his home where he is forbidden to return. When someone becomes psychotic due to any of the mental health diagnoses & a danger to themselves and/or others we have a duty to bring them to a hospital for treatment. Untreated mental illness results in negative outcomes.
ОтветитьIncredible human! Thank you for your advocacy.
Ответить🙏❤ "Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions and /(or your trauma). Small people always do that. But the really great ones, they make you believe that you too can become great/ (or overcome your trauma)." -Mark Twain
Ответитьreally happy to see someone like me so clever, it's motivating me to make it too. thank you from france
ОтветитьIf they cared, all comments, however negative should be allowed for the sake of mental illness and its understanding.
Ответить❤️ amazing

ОтветитьIf there was a video's comment section I ever expected to visit and react to, I must admit that this wasn't on my radar. At the time of typing this comment, I just got done finishing a two-page homework paper on schizophrenia, and this was... very confusing, to put it lightly. But therein lies the problem- I think the reason watching this was confusing for me isn't because the message is "bad", because I'm willing to bet this had a wonderful impact for so many people. The issue is that messages like this don't seem to be common enough, to the point where an outside viewer like myself has a hard time understanding the material just because people coming out with their experiences in this fashion is so uncommon. Or at least, uncommon for me to see.
Overall, this was an excellent message, but through no fault of the speaker's own, I wish I could understand cases like hers more than I did, because- if I'm being honest, I thought the speech was going completely off the rails for a second there.
People with schizophrenia are so smart. We owe them understanding because to lose these precious minds is a grave loss.
ОтветитьI've read Elyn's memoir! She's a powerful woman
ОтветитьQUEENS
Ответить❤️❤️❤️. Beautiful. Ty , thank you very much Mrs.Saks. well done 👍 well said.
ОтветитьFucking Mic Drop !!! Incredible use of the platform standing Ovation I hope folks are listening.
ОтветитьI just ordered Elyn's book "The centre cannot hold: My journey through madness", which is what lead me here.
I have Paranoid Schizophrenia myself. I was hospitalised twice and the trauma of this illness made me heavily depressed and I nearly committed suicide two years ago.
Elyn Saks is a role model and inspirational. She's proof that you can heal and achieve from this debilitating illness.
My battle with Paranoid Schizophrenia has lead to post traumatic growth in my life.
Thank you Elyn for making me proud to be part of this community.
Really heart-touching words. I believe people can get rid of mental illness with the help of meditation and Ayurveda like Planet Ayurveda's herbal remedies.
ОтветитьWell, that was pretty awesome!
ОтветитьThe last saying of her, the thing that all the mental people just want us to work and to love.
ОтветитьI am so proud of you.
ОтветитьWhat types of medications are used to treat conditions like Elyn's??
ОтветитьA law professor and also a psychiatrist and totally STUPID what a dangerous combination. "Ellen you dont really understand these people are psychotic they are DIFFERENT from me and u they wouldnt experience restraints as we do". Just shows you there are many morons with an education in high positions. Totally stupid, should never be allowed to work with vulnerable people and their human rights in psychiatry or law.
Ответить(I know seizures is not a mental illness! This is a comment about restraints)
When I had my first seizure I woke up in an ambulance in restraints. I had no idea where I was. I was just in P.E. and now I was in an ambulance. The lady next to me never told me I had an seizure just that I had to stay awake. I want to cry just thinking about how terrified I was. I wanted to escape, I wanted to sleep and I wanted to hit her. I know why I was in restraints but it was terrified. Everytime I have another seizure I get flashbacks to that time. I never want to even go near an ambulance anymore.
