Here’s a free one for you, Rachael: for some of us, the thought of cutting down on some forms of foods (eg carbs, chocolate) produces an unbearable feeling of loss and bereavement. No-carb grief, if you will. Now yes, we can survive that feeling through gritted teeth, but that’s 100 times more difficult if you’re already doing life through gritted teeth. If you’re emotionally at zero, the thought of tipping into minus figures is terrifying, and positive figures (1, 2) feel unattainable. So homeostasis kicks in. Your system feels that it is better to stay at zero than move either way. So you eat that chocolate. And hey presto, nothing changes.

ОтветитьHave watched twice, will watch again. This seems strikingly insightful (in meta + pragmatic ways), and I find the examples you give at the end particularly helpful. It’s a way of thinking & talking about the future on which I can model my own thoughts / actions / self-talk. Like many people, I’m fairly adept at abstract thought which, while interesting, doesn’t do what I most need… ie. what you describe — how does this apply to me (me, the actual person alive now in the real world, not some dissociated or “fantasy” self with great posture & skilled across many domains…). Thanks!
