The year started admist speculation over the immediate future of West Coast Railways.
Banned from using their MK1 stock with the paying passengers on board after Carnfoth 10A lost their court case against The Office of Road & Rail over the fitment of Central Door Locks which resulted in WCRC not being able to use their vacumn braked only steam locos to work mainline specials as centrol door locking can only work on air power not vacumn power.
45699 Galatea & 46115 Scots Guardsman were very noticeble absenties from the mainline this year.
After that West Coast during 2024 they were heading for rocky times ahead with 34067 Tangmere their only air brake fitted steam loco to operate for mainline work with air brake only aircon stock to fall back on with support from Ian Riley's orginisastion in providing 44871 & 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier along with KWVR's 45212 who also have air braking equipment fitted to the black 5 trio.
This also effected 45596 Bahamas as she to was a vacumn braked only loco as well. However she had a revival during the autumn as The Bahamas Locomotive Society re-established their partnership with Vintage Trains to save Bahamas's mainline season.
While West Coast Railways struggled their rivals Locomotive Services Group thrived to an all time high achieving success after they fitted central door locks to their Saphos MK1 stock sometime ago bringing in many highlights during the corse of 2024.
The only other vacumn braked only TOC for steam Vintage Trains had a much more better afair on the mainline unlike their West Coast counterparts.
Along with 45699 & 46115 as mentioned earlier 60103 Flying Scotsman was also a noticeble absents from the mainline steam scene due to the agreement had not been cemented between The NRM & the custodians the museum had chosen to look after the operations of the A3 pacific.
Many highlights were seen during the course of the year including.
60007 Sir Nigel Gresley's 65th Anniversary of his post war world speed record tour over Shap & The Settle & Carlisle
Our 1st filming of mainline steam in London
The return to the mainline after 22 years 60532 Blue Peter who made a massive impact on his return to steam
More Black 5 action on the mainline
Seeing 4 mainline bulleid pacifics & much more.
