I do my own on all of this, but I have a 2-post lift and a heated and cooled shop. Takes me about 20 minutes to do the whole thing.

Believe it or not, the super tech filter is better than the fram.

I have a Honda Accord, and a Honda Ridgeline. I can change the oil and rotate the tires on either one in an hour. I use a floor jack and some jack stands. Jack rear up, put it on a jack stand, then jack the front up, and rotate the tires. Then do the other side. I also torque the lug nuts with a torque wrench. I do use a Ridgid impact wrench though.

I don't know where you got your tire rotation instructions from but my local tire shops only do front to back. I have been told if you rotate a tire from one side to another changing the rotation on a tire, will cause the belts to break.

....IF you can find a decent oil change place that isn't going to strip your oil pan out, or spill engine oil all over the engine, or NOT change the oil filter at all. I don't trust most oil change places.

i buy toyota filters by the case, getting them super cheap, and i buy mobil 1 full synthetic 12 qt bulk box oil for about $50. So, I'm doing my oil changes for about $30, using a very premium oil, and an oem filter, with new crush washers, and o rings.

You should have also counted the time from when you left your driveway and got back home separately since this was related to your experience. Some people may have to drive hours to get to that “reputable” shop. I get free rotations at Costco, occasionally I would use them but I found for the hassle of waiting in line and dealing with rat race there I could do them faster myself. Also, their new guy stripped a wheel stud and blamed it on me. I always hand thread first and I hand torque wrench everything, so nice try.

Any reputable shop is just a new inexperienced tech away from becoming not reputable.

If it is a chore and you haven’t invested in decent tools by all means take it somewhere, there’s nothing wrong with employing service professionals, my only gripe is that you don’t always get a professional.

Also, if I had to change my oil once every few months I would be a lot faster or super tired of doing it. I go 5000 mi/change and do oil changes between our 3 cars 2-4 times a year depending on the year. I basically rotate tires when I switch to snow tires anymore with the pandemic.

Was still interesting to watch your video, I knew the Supertech to Fram would draw some educational comments. Thanks for putting the video together.

As you found, it is usually a similar cost except for the time. Of course you have pointed out you could shave quite a bit of time off the rotate with just a bit more tooling. I just like knowing what was done and am at a point currently where basic vehicle maintenance is dad time with the teens. That is priceless. As others have pointed out, take care with directional tires.

I actually injoy doing my own work on my truck even though the new tacomas are a little pain to change the oil.

Just my opinion, I think if you have the ability to change your own oil you should. You'll typically save a few bucks, but it's not about the money really rather its a easy job thats is good at getting people into basic mechanics. Once you change your oil and few times youll probably have the confidence to change your brakes, coolant, gear oil, trans oil, maybe a alternator or belts which is where the actual savings will come. You could pay 300-500$ for front pads and rotors where you could DIY it for around 100$ roughly. Once you can do other stuff and understand mechanics more then sure get it done but it's a valuable skill that will be useful down the road.

I used to change my own oil until I realized it was actually the same cost to have someone else with the proper setup do it. All you gain by doing it yourself is a sense of self satisfaction and a big, leaky jug of used motor oil that’s now YOUR problem to dispose of.

I don't know how could you do oil change that cheap but my local jeffy lube charges $125 for an iil change with oil filter if synthetic (5qts). Most lube charge places use big drum oil which has high chance to get contaminated. Lastly and the most importantly since i started changing my own oil all my vehicles started running like brand new. My recommendation for all , if you have time to change your own oil please don't waste your money for any quick lube please no matter how cheap they are offering. You just don't know how much they draining and what kind of cheap oil they putting in your vehicle

Great video! I do my own oil and service on my vehicles, I'm an independent tech and I do enjoy doing those stuff. But I will say going to your local shop is great. You also have to account the time it took for you to drive and get the supplies, and more importantly the potential of being injured while doing your own oil change, tire rotation, or repairs.

I change my own oil using high mileage FULL synthetic oil and a Premium filter and it cost $45. Using an oil change place AND full synthetic is around $90. This video must be sponsored. Also, most shops charge $20 for a rotation. That would be $110. You’re also not including the drive time to the shop. When you change your own oil you can pick up the supplies at any point between changes when you’re at the store.

You got a bargain from the shop even without the tire rotation.

I do my own oil changes but tire rotation I take to discount Tire. I forget if they charge or not....for 4 tire rotation?.

It cost me less then $25.00 for an oil change at home.
