For me the thing I always liked about Bose was how you could bring out a specific instrument when playing songs which I no longer find since all audio went digital. But most speakers tend to be generic bass speakers and don't bring out other parts of the audio. Which Bose focuses on which is the best part of those speakers and are not for blasting music which one gets from amps used in concerts.

I took Gene DellaSalla advice and got a Harmon Kardon 3490 which I paired to my Series Vi Bose 901s. Best move I ever made. Not only is the 2ch HK 3490 at 125 per channel enough to drive the 901s, the sound fidelity is only rivaled by speakers costing 5 times as much. Set it up right and the 901s , despite the haters, will soothe even the most rabid audioholic. Honestly, most audiophiles will be hard pressed to find a better set up for the money. Prove me wrong. . People that know audio know 901s. If you’re one who subscribes to the SMPTE curve, which most do, then Bose will suit you just fine. You really don’t need Klipsch or Maggie’s to make you feel or listen better as the only thing that’ll be lighter with Klipsch or Maggie’s is your wallet. ,

I ve used many Bose systems as well as other speakers - the likes of Monitor Audio, JBL or Mirage - I have to say, they all have unique abilities.

Each is just different - depending on what you look for in sound.

Not too sure if I think Bose is lower in qualities compared to any brand.

In fact, I still use Bose AM 15 systems, and sometimes, they still amaze me after all these years.

The original AM-5 cubes did have covers taht came off - exposing the same, shitty little paper cone. I might add that when Bose was demoing the AM-5s about 6 months before release - the top cube was connected to the bottom with a 1/4 phono plug, and it was marketed as being able to be separated and placed using a 1/4in extension cable. This unfortunately never made it into the production run - and I remember trying so hard to pull them apart when they were released - and not understanding why I couldn't. lol

Bose does an amazing amount of research, which you're saying WHILE you say, "most of their money goes to litigation and marketing", tsk. And I do have some 901 Series V on a Crown DC300 Series II amp (150wpc/465w peaks), and an SVS 2000p Pro sub (12", 500w/1500w peaks; they sent me port plugs on request for free!) hardwired to an iPhone 13 Pro Max. I can't hear anything over 13kHz, and the sub wrecks anything under 120Hz. It's not "standing in the forest in a light rain" imaging like my Magnepan IIB's, it's like being pushed into a pool of soundstage everywhere regardless of where you are in the room (I have a special chair with a head brace to hit my Maggies sweet spot... lulz). I love playing classic rock on them at optimum cock-bag levels! It's like being in a mosh pit more than in a symphony hall or opera house or whatever like the Maggies do. With the Maggies I can hear Stevie Nicks dead center with drums behind her, Christine McVie on her right, Mic Fleetwood on her left, and some random backup singers behind Christine; godly imaging and soundstage that extends to 90 degrees on both sides outside the speakers. Impossible to close your eyes and point to the speakers aka, "the sound is coming from there". Can't do that with the Bose either because everyone is everywhere all the time. I used this comparison because Maggies are direct-reflecting too; the panels radiate both ways (also like open baffle?), but they do it in a precise way.
TL;DR There are precise speakers and there are fun speakers and many other types as well. You don't have to know the difference to know what you like and helps you enjoy your favorite recordings. I'm fortunate enough to live alone in a house so I have both. I have some Markaudio Cesti B's on the way and am really excited to add some "normal" speakers to the mix. With a strong subwoofer just about every speaker type can achieve greatness, you don't have to buy Klipsch or some other insanely priced full range that can get into the 20Hz range (my sub is rated at -3 @ 16Hz open ports).

One of the main points you may have briefly touched on, was audio files, like to tinker and have lots of options. Most consumers just want it easy to use and when they get home from a hard days work just to have it work and good sound. They don’t want a lot of buttons to control and settings to adjust. Small, simple, easy to use…great marketing. Two completely different types of consumers.

I checked BOSE and other home movie sound systems when building my home theater 11 years ago. Though impressive (at their stores) I could not justify their $2000 to $10,000 price tags. So I put together my own system using an RCA receiver, an RCA subwoofer, two Pioneer SS speakers, an RCA front center speaker, and two Radio Shack wood tower speakers (Pawn shop $10 each) for L & R front speakers. Total<$500. Haven't seen a need to replace this system in 11 yrs. But, most important with any home-theater is the room prep (from front dead-wall (no sound reflection), to minimally reflective side and back walls (85% sound absorption using dark green carpeting) are vital to a great theater experience as well as the sound system.

Well, Let me say this about that.........
Years and years ago I worked for a company called Berstein-Applebee in K.C. MO. selling audio equipment. The one issue I had with Bose was not the sound but the outrageous amount of power it took to drive their speakers. The JBL, Altec and others like them produced high quality sound with about 1/3 of the wattage the Bose required. When Fry's was in Dallas, there was an audio room where you could listen to all of the newest and greatest speakers and receivers. Again, while there for computer equipment I would visit that room just for the pleasure of listening. And, the Bose still required more receiver volume to get any real enjoyment. Just saying.

I have several older high end speaker and amp setups in my house currently.. I'm bit of an audio hobbyist and a pack rat I admit.. because every piece of audio equipment I have since high school.. is still in great shape.. but the Bose 901 series V model system I have paired with a robust 90s Yamaha AX-930 integrated amp rocks the house; it's specs are 130 per channel @ 8 ohms--217 @ 4 ohms, high dynamic output with a damping factor of 500, total harmonic distortion of 0.005%. When you crank this thing up connected to the Bose 901 pairing, put on a great recording... I don't care if you're directly in the room or outside the house.. you would think the band was literally live; you'll find yourself tempted to go find the musicians because it is that astonishing. You may spend more an exorbitant amount on brand new high tech equipment, but anything would do well to compete with this 1989-1991 amp paired with the 901 series V Bose system.

Sonos is not an audio device at all. At least Bose puts a CD player in their products. Smart speakers spy on you and end up in the trash after a year. If you're trashing on Bose in todays market, you're not an Audiophile.

Just by owning a Tidal Audio Akira speakers ($255000/pair) one doesn’t qualify being an audiophile , likewise
Bose bashing doesn’t make one an audiophile either .
People are free to listen to what they want . If someone enjoys Bose , so be it .
Just because one drives a Ferrari, doesn’t mean you can keep bashing the Hondas .
Just because one wears a Patek , doesn’t make Rolex a bad watch either .

Go ahead Tidal audio , Ferrari, and Patek’s and their kinds , if it were just by “marketing” , why don’t you “Market “ similarly and get that mass appeal and do those kind of sales .
If so called Audiophiles are so cool , then stop bashing Bose .
In the entire audio industry, that’s the name which is well known . Audiophiles are just envious .
They can keep tweaking their Turn tables , cartridges , tone arms , interconnects, power cables , spikes underneath their speakers , room treatments , spikes under their speakers . Ultra expensive speaker cables … and still not be able to enjoy their music .
Let’s stop the Hate .
I started my audio journey with a small transistor pocket radio and then a Sony wm 10 Walkman and on and on .. since then .
One thing becomes obvious here … the so called “audiophile world” today is not talking about the Tidal Audio Akira speakers … but are fixated in Bose bashing , it’s like they envy Bose due to Bose’s commercial success.
And yes those 901s … even almost 7 years after being discontinued, “audiophile’s” are still talking about them .
Ha ha .. go figure
Love the Music , let it flow , if it sounds good to you .. enjoy .
Stop the hate !

Before I was married and started a family back in the 80s, sure, I had BIG audio systems with high end components and the music sounded fantastic. One of the first things that my new wife "encouraged" me to do was to get rid of my big bulky audio system equipment and go to a compact "Bose like" system for the superior interior ascetics. So, with the constrain that my audio system had to be very small...I moved down to Yamaha components...still too large...I finally ended up with Bose! Sure, it doesn't have the best sound, but the sound is good, and it is very small, and my wife loves our Bose 600 soundbar with Bose Bass Module 500 (700 too big) for our TV watching and music listening. We also have Bose Wave radios in our bedrooms, because it's the only audio system that "fits" in our bedrooms and it has a clock! So, I love Bose because if they didn't exist, I would be listening to music on a phone and watching TV with its built-in speakers!! God bless Bose!

As a musician for 30 years, and music being the core of my life, I have naturally acquired starting in my teens stereo systems and eqpt. that far exceed anything of my peers. That said, and I'm not sure "why" but I do not like the term "audiophile". Now that's out of the way, I know why "audiophiles" don't like Bose, and that's because Bose will "color" the sound of their systems and speakers. You are not getting a neutral representation of what was recorded. However, audiophiles have it wrong that Bose does not make good stereo systems. Buy a Cadiallac and I bet the Bose stereo that comes with it exceeds anything your other cars may have had. Bose is really good at making small speakers sound large with excellent bass. Their waveguide portable stereos have a frequency response far beyond anything else on the market and at that size. Now what Bose does best I think is being able to create a soundstage that envelopes the entire room that is clear and balanced. In other words as you walk around the room, the sound does not increase or decrease as you move closer or further from the speakers. My favorite Bose speakers, the 901's do an excellent job of this. Lastly, like or hate Bose, one thing you cannot disagree with: They build their speakers and eqpt to last not years, but decades. Bose eqpt. really does last and stand up to the test of time without losing any of their capability. So why do "audiophiles" hate Bose? Probably because they are a bunch of rich, and pompous blow hards who wish they could play an instrument but can't. So they somehow think that if they spend ridiculous amounts of money on stereo eqpt. it somehow makes them musicians, and since Bose does "color" or change the sound - in a good way mind you - they go off on Bose because somebody has to be the fall guy they can turn their noses down on. Or not. what do I know? Other than 30 years playing 5 different instruments, but have focused on drums the majority of that time. Listening to music 4-6 hours a day. Yeah, I wouldn't listen to what I say, and listen to what the "experts", the audiophiles, who spend money on stereo eqpt. like there are not needy people in the word going hungry where that money could be so much better spent. Besides, you wanta quality ound system for the home, you don't need to spend crazy amounts of money, just buy "pro" grade epqt for your home and stay away from the consumer stuff. You almost can't go wrong with any major Pro brand that is well established, and won't feel guilty for doing it. But spending $20,000 on a pair of speakers to brag about to your friends is not a good way to live your life. Peace.

My Beef with BOSE is Car Audio. It is a marketing gimmick only. My last vehicle with BOSE was a 05 G35. It sounded cheap. The BOSE speakers said Clarion. They were made of plastic, looked like something from Fisher Price Toys. Replaced them with JBL GTO, and heard a vast improvement. With clever Marketing, you can sell Ice to Eskimos. For Home Audio, my preference is Polk Audio. They aren't perfect but the clarity is amazing.

They froze a marine speaker in a thinish block of ice
So there describing how far advanced they are, and you can hear
this speaker, un amplified, just chirping away inside this ice
so he has a little rocker switch or something, saying, you ready, you ready
so he flips the switch, the amp comes on and the ice shattered.
WHAT A DISPLAY...
I Mean, it definitely works for them.
I Got to grow up in a town with an air force base

and a lot of them bought those monster Sansui, Marantz, and Pioneer receiver's

Giant Klipsch cabinet speakers, or the pioneer short towers, with the
freq, knob on the face, so the dads would take the front grill off of them, because they looked cooler. Lol
But us kids PUT THOSE DAMN SYSTEMS TO WORK.
Lol.
My dad's sister married a surgeon, and he had the most beautiful stereo system
any one has ever seen; that's how i remember it.
But, same thing, me and my cousin at 12 years old, would listen
at uncomfortable volumes.
About 10 years ago it dawned on me...
It was all Macintosh
He had outdoor speakers installed in the bluffs behind his tennis court
at his house, in like 1981 / 82?
He was like, chief of surgery at his hospital, and was a seriously respected dr.
But the older I got, the cooler i realized that man was.
They are possibly on call all the time, but we would visit, and they would party
and my dad was a pro in the area of party, but he said "your uncle jack ain't a normal man"
That guy could drink Scotch all day long, starting just as the clock hit 12;01 p.m. because they aren't alcoholics, but he would drink, like Scotch was refreshing or something.
He never changed his cadence or speech; he was just fine and sober as far as anybody knew.
But what a neat, respectable man, who just enjoyed having fun.
And at a flip of a switch, or monday morning
he was the most serious person in his community.

I have the AM-5 Series 1 since 37 years, so not yet the one with the plasticky bass tube in this video. By then, one of the first things I did was opening both the bass module and the cubes. Especially looking inside the bass module made me impressed about the sophisticated make. The speakers are mounted onto a diagonally aligned baffle board so you get 2 acoustic housings inside one. Now in order to achieve an intense bass output, the tubes have different lengths to accommodate the physics and achieve kind of a push-pull speaker system. I guess the later series have a much cheaper and hence, more primitive architecture.
It requires substantial knowledge on the user side, in order to place all items correctly. First of all, the bass module has to face a wall or corner with the tube holes pointing towards. For my 32 square metres living room the best configuration I managed was placing the bass module at a corner with a distance of about 200 mm for the tube holes, and the side facing the wall at 150 mm. The cubes are hung from the ceiling at around 300 mm, with a distance of around 1,50 m from the walls and 5 m between each other. The cubes are set to Reflecting, while the upper ones face to the closer walls and the lower one to the mid of the room, twisted by around a 90 degrees angle.
Recently I connected them to a 2x 70 Watts RMS tube amp, and since then I enjoy listening to them again for hours. I like their sound very much, while I admit that the system lacks mids which cannot be corrected in any way because of the nature of this system (subwoofer plus tiny twiddler speakers in plastic housings) . Some more mids and a more precise but less bass can be achieved by positioning the bass module farther from the wall. That being said, your ears adapt to all this very soon, and then this system is a really great deal.

It's these small groups who squabble over the price, ignoring the quality you get. You lose credit when you refer to lesser brands because you pay less for more equipment. So by the same logic you hate Mercedes, Rolex, Rolls Royce etc. You can get niche products in all fields. Most people would rather pay for proven quality.
