I remember in 1994 when I guy I was stationed with, tried to get me to go to his Judo class. I wasn't interested in that style of Martial Arts, but I do remember him saying that Steven Seagal was legit back then....that was about 4-5 years before the internet blew up.

I once matched up with a friend who studied Aikido when I taught karate. it was a very short fight. He tried to grapple and I kicked him in the solar plexus and that was the end.

I've never seen an Aikido demo that wasn't just students cartwheeling around as their sensei waved his hands at them. If it's legit, it's buried under tons of bullshit mcdojos giving it a bad rep

I've always listened and appreciated Joe's critiques ,but also I've enjoyed Steven seagal's criticisms and critiques, at the same time many others, I think it should be considered that freedom of expression in life, just like Bruce Lee talked about in some of his interviews is a very important teaching aspect to improve somebody's humanity. To use one's fame by making money and also teaching people about subjects like the underworld, human trafficking and drug trade. like Bruce Lee did in his movies or Steven seagal who talked about environmental concerns in on deadly ground are to be commended. As we go on in life we all have good times and bad times ,but I for one don't want mine to be full of half-witted comments. Why so serious. In a statured fight it's always harder when you know it's coming but not how it's coming and timing's got everything to do with it, but I've seen street fights with some fighters who had some real flow. I also knew some very hardcore gangsters who used total intimidation. which in some cases was worse than the actual act of violence itself. As in anticipation of death worse than death itself. But my opinion which is subjective of course is that he has choreographed some really good fight scenes in some good movies with some subject matter that I appreciate it. I consider it an honorable thing when somebody respectfully calls you teacher, no matter what language it is in. So to end it all say I appreciate you Joe and the freedom of expression in your commentaries and the people that you have on as guest or of high quality subject matter. Thanks...

It takes a lot of selecting what is good from a Martial Art as far as efectiveness goes, it may take years. But it's worth it. I have applied Aikido techinques in street fights, just enough to stun an opponent and crush and finish him with a Hapkido or Silat move. End of story.

I agree that many martial arts arent suited for the modern world of trained combat sports. honestly anyone that knows a decent bit of boxing and grappling from a judo or wrestling background can probably at least hold their own against a black belt in something like aikido or karate.

A very high level view on the topic as most of Joe's discussions. This is to be expected from a person that can discuss origami in one show and quantum singularity in another. As a person who studied aikido for 13 years I can confidently say that Seagal was very solid in his prime days. Also most people who reason about aikido effectiveness should first define what exactly they are looking for. For example I may say that a gun is more effective than all martial arts combined but for some reason it doesn't stop people from learning those martial arts and for reasons that include not only kill or win everyone and everything. Aikido has unique philosophical aspects within that help building a balanced personality and a healthy body. Since there's no competition goal trainings are much more cooperative since people view you not as a competitor but a partner in understanding techniques and body mechanics that make those techniques work. Once you properly understood technique you need to spend a lot of time training it - this is no different from any other skill

Aikido works best for the regular folks who just want to disarm other regular bad guys for example in a mugging or the bully at the supermarket. Aikido is not meant for real fight competition. Joe is right, an aikido guy would get demolished by a professional fighter.

Yeah aikido is more like a tool than a whole diverse set of skills like kung fu or something. Aikido often is used to teach women how to redirect the weight and force of an attacker rushing them in a mall parking lot so they get enough time to arm their taser while the dude’s picking himself up. Nothing wrong with that but Seagal being so over the top about aikido is like someone who can only jab claiming to be an mma expert.
