The protagonist survives the crash and mentally goes back to recall his companion. It's a metaphor for a lost love as it implies their relationship crashed. There was no physical crash and no one truly died. But the protagonist feels he can piece back together the relationship if he analysis the tiny bits that broke it apart. Like a scientist.
Technically, the video is pretty cool. For him to lip-sync the lyrics he would have had to practice for a bit. Also, on the set, they would be playing the song backwards at super high speed.
It would have looked ridiculous. The high speed is because his mouth syncs forwards in slow motion.
