I regularly use full auto and have pin sharp pictures. Only thing i edit is flash off and back button focus.
I don’t understand why you were getting poor shots on full auto. Maybe need a different lens or camera?

Hi Paul. I understand the reasons auto results in poor exposure vs manual mode. My question is why should good/bad exposure influence focus whether in auto or manual focus?

Sorry but this video makes zero sense, if your goal is to make artistic long exposure pictures, of course the Auto mode is not going to work. You should compare Manual and Auto with normal pictures. Also, it extremely strange that the pictures are so out of focus with the automatic mode.

It seems that the only purpose of this video is to make people who always shoot in full Manual feel superior, that's it.

I would recommend that beginners use program mode Instead of intelligent auto mode if they are not shooting under special conditions like trying to capture a water fall or doing night shots. Program mode can give a consistent results and you can also change some basic settings.

Great video Paul. I have been using Manual setting more and more of late with my 90D and have been having mixed results. Generally, the shots are pretty good and I am slowly but surely getting there. What I have started doing of late is shooting in Manual but cheating a little I think, and that is I have been using auto ISO in manual mode. What are your thoughts on this? Im finding better results a lot of the time using this method. Could you maybe do a video on this method and maybe help me further with any tips.

Auto mode was not made for long exposures. It is barely any good for "snap shots". I don't use auto mode on my Canon SL2 but when I use my phone it is a lot like auto mode. Of course AV is my usual mode on the SL2 because I usually take still shots in natural light. I was taught to do it in manual but I did notice that AV did the trick quickly. I don't get much of a chance to take long exposure photos here because I live on a quiet dead end street.

Hi Paul, love your channel and great video. Could you help me with something please as I have looked online but am still stuck. I've a Nikon D5100 and I've been trying to use Manual mode but all images come out completely white. I've changed ISO and exposure settings but it still remains. I have even reset all camera settings but alas it still occurs. It works fine on Auto and also "P" (programme?). Any idea what I am missing please?

I would also be interested into a comparison like "iPhone 12 Pro auto/manual vs DSLM manual". I am asking because I just bought a Canon M50 and it took me a while to decide. I wasn't sure at all wether to invest in a camera or not since smartphones cameras are really good nowadays.
Can we get similar results with a smartphones auto or manual mode compared to a beginner DSLM camera like the Canon M50?

Could you just increase exposure while editing to make up for poor lighting from auto mode? Or Is manual just better for sharpness, quality all the time?

P, Av, Tv are easier steps for me at the moment than full manual. I guess once I learn some rules of thumb for Aperture and f number (searching on the way now :)) I might go over to manual.

Hi Paul, I'm just going through some of your videos & find them very informative.
In this video, unless I missed it I didn't see any mention of focus points, or with an aperture of f14 isn't it so important ?.

This does not make sense if you're not focusing manually (which you apparently aren't). You're only changing the exposure settings, and if this leads to an unfocused/unsharp rock with the only change being auto mode, there's either a)something wrong with your camera, or b) your tripod is moving whereby the point of focus is shifting.

This is all very well for landscape photographers but your headline makes no reference to this. Any sort of action work would be dead in the water working this way, and portrait photographers would mark you down for using autofocus.

Your reference to full auto is what we would call idiot mode, not really used by anybody beyond a complete novice. You make no comment on the gamut of auto settings available on a modern camera, all of which have some relevant applications. If you don't tell someone what aperture priority is then you haven't finished the job.

Not true with a Nikon. I shot auto first and then see where I am at. Then fine tune. Getting the perfect setting in a hurry is a times impossible.
