Market Garden was an Allied operation in September 1944. Its objective was to create a salient into German territory with a bridgehead over the Rhine , thus opening up an invasion route into Germany. This was to be achieved by seizing nine bridges with airborne forces ("Market") followed by land forces ("Garden"). Market Garden turned out to be one of the greatest Allied disasters.
2.000 paratroopers landed on the Ginkelse Heide near Ede in 1944.
This is nowadays commemorated by massdrops of paratroopers from NATO countries.
