Robert E. Lee was an oath breaker and a traitor to his country. It doesn’t matter to me if he was a military genius, his treachery exhausts any admiration I might have for him otherwise.

Eisenhower was a progressive liberal, he won the northern liberal states and lost in the conservitive south states. hence why he was asked about General Lee. and they were laughing cause they were enemies fighting for the other side.

I'm surprised President Eisenhower didn't list Thomas Jefferson as one of our Nation's Greatest Americans. You'd think President Jefferson would have been the first name on his list, and/or that he would have added one more name to the list if he felt that strongly about the four men he did list. Thomas Jefferson is number one in my book merely because of the role he played in bringing our Declaration of Independence to fruition. And that is our greatest document, as it is the foundation of our entire Republic.

Monty criticizing anyone's generalship is a big horse laugh. Besides that, Gettysburg was lost because the first 2 Southern generals to get there hesitated and failed to follow the age old maxim of " take the high ground". I believe one was Jubal Early. I forget the other. Then they blamed Gen Longstreet who came later when it was too late. Once the yankees fortified the hilltops the baytle was a foregone conclusion. Any wise general staff would've withdrawn instead of wasting all those men and materials. Gettysburg wasn't really that much of a strategic point. Kinda like Hitler at Stalingrad; better to hav bypassed ut and just kept the Russian troops bottled up there.

If you study history by reading the primary documents, you will find Lincoln was a tyrant who consolidated power in the central government on behalf of corporate interests. Washington was better as a General than a President. His Whiskey Rebellion and carriage tax were both unconstitutional. Eisenhower was an administrator who Patton stated purposefully allowed the Russians to overrun Eastern Europe. He warned us about the military industrial complex but forgot to tell us they were his gulf buddies. Lee freed his slaves before Grant and was an amazing General. The north had a population of 30 million compared to 10 million in the south. Lee almost pulled off a win in Gettysburg had one officer not plugged a gap in the Federals line.

I think the best way to explain how nobody gets the, "Lost Cause," was and how crazy of a mindset it was is to try and explain to someone deeply steeped in American Civil War history but who wasn't brought up in that environment that a guy could somehow celebrate Lincoln and Lee at the same time, on equal level, as "great Americans," and not see the contradiction there.

To make it even harder for someone to fathom, this same guy sent the US Army to protect Black students during the integration of US public schools.

Ike was without a doubt one of the 4 best presidents in my lifetime; I'm 72 now - was born in 1951. These 4 great men - in my humble opinion, are - Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, & Ronald Reagan. Kinda sad that we've had such trash in the White House since Reagan. The state of the country at this time attests to that . . .

Imagine being a leader today and telling people one of your heroes is general lee. Obviously, there's nothing wrong with that, but it shows the lack of intelligence in the current US population. You can look at general lee and see the great things he's accomplished. There's plenty of failures, and how he could morally stand on the side of the south. It's way more complicated and people who aren't emotionally broken can understand. Maybe just realize life is life, stop judging or being angry. One may start to understand possibly why the democrats allow crime in their cities, or why they think it's okay to cut off kids body parts, or tell women it's honorable to suck a child out of their body. They're sick people.

Eiesenhower was a desk officer that never saw combat in his life. He never even left the USA during WW 1 when he was a young officer. The idea that this guy should be commenting on any work of real soldiers seems odd. But that is the USA, pencil pushers are "Heros" and smoking was not bad for you nor was barbecues all because the TV told you so ...ah you got to love the 50s

I want to say he was a life long Gettysburg resident as a matter of fact the president's home sits on former confederate ground so don't let his disapproval of Lee fool you. Also his connection to Lincoln because 1 spent the night and the other lived there until his death in 1969. Eisenhower received a gift from the secret service which was the fireplace that Lincoln used during his presidency and was installed in Eisenhower's Gettysburg farm.

Robert E Lee was a traitor, and should have faced the ultimate penalty capital punishment if he did not admit to his crimes… Southern people never learned what they did was wrong… They wanted to build a society based on the owning of other human beings… Sending a message that the south’s top leaders should face the ultimate consequence would’ve sent a big lesson to these traitors

I'm not sure how you call Lee a great American. A great general, certainly. An honorable man, certainly. The most skilled general of the Civil War, right up there. But ultimately he chose Virginia over America. Ike may have thought Lee a great American, and saying so might have been politically astute, but I'm not so sure history bears out his judgment.

Lee was swept up by events leading up to the battle at Gettysburg. You could argue that that shouldn't happen to a general. But aside from Lee, the Union Army at Gettysburg was a nut that just wouldn't crack; whether because of terrain, leadership, or just plain stubborn cussedness, the Union Army held despite everything that Lee threw at it.

Remember when our president led in integrity. As for the unwonted commentary of Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, who cares what he thinks? The trail of Monty’s strategic failures through Messina, Caen, Falaise, Nijmegen, and Antwerp suggest he couldn’t carry Marse Lee’s jock strap. By the way, at the time Ike was asked this question, he had opted to take up residence on the Gettysburg battlefield. Suspect he might know his topic.

The problem with Lee wasn’t Gettysburg (which his order of Pickett’s charge was absurdly bad) it was the way he fought the war.

Lee just needed to fight like the Continental Army in the revolutionary war.

Only one Rebel General (Johnston) knew this. Johnston constantly criticized Lee’s handling of the war. And he was correct. If the south has less men and material, WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO FIGHT A WAR OF ATTRITION? It’s insane.

It’s why Grant showed up and had Lee surrendered in 6 months after all other Generals took 4 years.

Grant was the better General. Easy.
