Some of us can sing Steve's vocals and I especially LOVE to sing "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever", partly because it's such a challenging vocal to sing, partly because the melodic lines he weaves during the guitar solo are stunning, and partly because it's so damned much FUN to sing. The biggest difference (aside from him being illegally talented, mind you) is that his voice stays buttery smooth, while mine starts to become a but rough and scratchy around Eb5. Nonetheless, hearing him sing is like hearing a proverbial choir of angels. When you hear that inimitable voice, silky smooth and brilliantly powerful at the same time, you know who you're dealing with.

Journey is pretty much my favorite. Steve's voice was amazing. But... I heard in several interviews with the other band members. That Steve made them all so unhappy and upset, because he was pretty much a dick. Not in those words, but you get the jest. Imo... ohhh well... I love their music, and I didn't have to deal with Steve.

Another thing to consider is that Steve didn't use on stage monitors and was always running round on stage. His pitch was ALWAYS right on and that was way before the use of in-ear monitors like today. He was a master and very physical at singing. His power came from the diaphragm. I was a live sound engineer in the eighties and was amazed how Steve could sing like that without onstage monitors. They had side-fills but those are somewhat limited as well. Steve was the best frontman in rock PERIOD!

He's the Pavarotti of rock. As I open Carnegie Hall tomorrow with Vivaldi's Gloria, we could sure use him in the tenor section. Thank you SP for all the great music both in my youth and going forward. Bravo!

I saw journey live with Steve in his prime. There is no comparison. If I needed a singer for my band he's my first pick and I'd be wouldn't come aboard I'd forget about it.
