At the beginning of the summer of 1941, he took refuge with his parents in Sarthe at Courgenard, at a place called "La Bassetière", with Baptiste and Irma Dumur [24].

The artistic professions being forbidden to the Jews, no one wants to hire his father as a pianist. The latter must therefore move to the free zone in 1942 to find work and escape poverty. The police checks are more and more numerous in the capital and the whole family ends up joining him in January 1944 in the Limoges region with false papers. They took refuge in the hamlet of Grand Vedeix in the town of Saint-Cyr in Haute-Vienne under the name of Guimbard. The girls are hidden with the nuns of the Sacré-Coeur school in Limoges [25], and Lucien in a Jesuit college in Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat. He is a resident there under his false identity. One evening, the Gestapo raided the establishment to verify that no Jewish children were sheltering there. The boarding school officials send him to hide alone in the forest, where he spends the whole night in fear of being caught and killed. He will live thereafter with the feeling of being a survivor [26].

During these years of war, the Ginsburg family saw French nationality entirely withdrawn by a special commission set up by Vichy, which considered them to be “Israelites without national interest”. On one of the commission's reports, found in 2010 [27], one can read, about Joseph, Serge's father: “Exercising the profession of pianist, the named Ginsburg who travels frequently currently resides in Lyon. […] Her son Lucien is enrolled at Du Guesclin college. […] It appears, however, that the person concerned left the capital in 1941 for the free zone to avoid trouble because of his confession. »The commission decides:« general withdrawal ».
