They're not gatekeeping at all, the internet has been aware of the fact that there's a bunch of furries in very well paid positions in companies, whether in tech or infrastructure maintenance, who are willing to pay a pretty penny. Demand is pretty high too. The only problem does tend to be that this is driving up the expected cost, which means some of us lower income peeps can't necessarily get things we want made.

...by the way, if a not-so-reasonably well executed ref sheet is going into the multi-hundreds of dollars (or equivalent currency) then uh... you might be getting scammed. I have ref sheets for two characters that were well made and didn't break the bank.

I am actually unemployed btw. So no, not everyone is in like, these super highly well paid jobs. I'm disabled, so I'm actually in a position where 'normal' work is not really an option for me.

I will continue to argue, if an artist is happy being paid lower amounts for their work, don't push them to mark their work up unless you understand WHY they want to keep their prices low. It's not fair to put that kind of pressure on them. Some of these people are (like myself) disabled people who NEED support, but that support goes away if they're earning too much.

With regards to learning how to draw it... there's an Aussie fellow I follow by the name of Lines Sensei who did a really neat set of tutorial videos recently on it. Great guy with a lot of enthusiasm, but his videos are also really relaxing to watch. You could also study the work of established professional artists like Bob M. Guthrie (who has done a lot of work for Warner, and was one of the artists behind Lola Bunny). Yes, it shouldn't be all that surprising, Space Jam was a big awakening for a LOT of furries. Not me, I was heading that direction earlier (I blame Disney and a number of anime studios).

The $$$ of the furry community has been a running "joke" for well over 20 years now. Furry art was what started me on an actual art learning journey, even though I didn't continue down that path.

Wanted to chime in an important note that not ALL furries are into fursuits and while there is, obviously, going to be a sect of those who suit that DO engage in sexual activities, many would never, ever put their suit into that kind of danger of damage. They are not only extremely expensive, they aren't easy to clean, either, because they often contain some serious construction and detail work. All furry characters are also not Fursonas, some are just OCs. And a final note, despite the jokes about beastiality, the majority of furries are very much about animal protection and rights. They wouldn't harm an animal, and would be appalled at any form of abuse. Of course, predators and abusive people are always going to find their way into communities to try and protect themselves. Just like PDF movements have tried to slide into the LGBT community or hide in the church.

They aren't welcome.

I don't know, I think it's just like any other professional artist. There are far more struggling artists than wealthy ones. The rich ones are truly skilled. It's not like you'll get rich just by being able to draw furries. Besides, if you don't have even a little passion for it, you shouldn't do it. The client would probably be disappointed if they knew. (I'm a hobbyist anthro artist btw. I turn characters I like into dogs.)

I recently got into art and I draw anthropomorphic creatures because they are a lot easier to draw and have a lot less restrictions than If I were to draw humans.

I don't consider myself a furry, rather I enjoy drawing furries because its just simpler and lets my creativity go even further

Am I not rich at all. Just first time getting a job and having no bills while having no idea how to manage money and living very cheaply.

Not sure where I stand, I have a bunch of recurring furry, scaley, and at least two alien ocs. But I only have at least 3 human ocs, one is a dragon girl, one is a soldier, one is a spear wielder. Lastly, I have a satyr oc, (half-goat, half human).

Regardless, I generally draw my furry ocs for myself (i even made oc cards) in pixel art. I’ve incorporated my furry ocs into different art mediums and art styles (much more than my human ocs).

However, I spend money on other things like food, drinks, figurines of anime characters, a few cosplays.

So….that’s it for now

"Why are all these artists suddenly interested in making furry art?"

Money & fame, that's pretty much the gist of it.

I know of some that genuinely ended up moving from anime to furry art out of pure interest, some for world building and others for a new change of pace. It's just that with how most are with social media, it ends up mostly being done to garner attention, which could lead to popularity, and with said popularity could come more money.

Furry artists have bee around for 40 yrs if not longer, but it was always just a group hobby, and not done primarily just for fame/money, but today it certainly feels like it is mostly done for clout/money, than it is out of pure "for the art, don't need money for my pursuit". I've even seen some artists that could originally produce something freely, but then later on end up needing "funding" for something they otherwise would have done before for nothing and via pure passion, which is why I end up seeing it mostly being done for money first, passion later.

(This also would explain the motives more when you realise how much of said content of passion gets locked behind patreon walls for months, sometimes years and other times, indefinitely, and it's always to draw in money, and not to actually show the world their art).

Personally speaking, I'd love to get back into drawing again, but I want to out of passion for world-building with the characters I already have and new ones I wish to create. That is my first main thought process, rather than "I'm getting back into it to make thousands of dollars on YCH's/Pin-ups, and making a patreon to lock everything behind the wall like it's an ATM".

Art is just part of it. If you make fursuits, like really good ones, you'll make money. A full suit can be like 8k or more. 3d model rigs for vr chat. If you can make good ones, you'll gain a rep and a lot of money.

I had a simillar experience once. Someone wanted to comission me to draw their fursona for 100$. I didn't have a rep. The guy just liked my artstyle. I couldn't accept the comission because I didn't have the time.

And as a low key furry who draws their own art, I don't need the money. I have a very good day job repairing office computers. I dunno why but furries do associate with tech or stem jobs. I've never had a problem with employment or money.
