Here is a real treat and quite a rarity. Who would have ever thought country legend Roy Clark would pair up with bluesman Gatemouth Brown? They did, and under the production of Steve Ripley they recorded an amazing album of swing-meets-blues dance music! It looks like the album cover was shot atop Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, and the sessions were at Tulsa Studios in Tulsa.
Tulsa's drummer extraordinaire, Jim Keltner was on board for the October 31-November 2 sessions. Roy Clark may be best-known for being on the zany country comedy show Hee Haw. Gatemouth worked on his own 1996 album Long Way Home with Leon Russell as pianist and guest vocalist on Leon's own songs "Blues Power" and "Mean And Evil."
"Talk About A Party" was written by Kent Harris, a successful novelty songwriter ("Shoppin' For Clothes" - The Coasters 1960, "Cops & Robbers" - Bo Diddley 1957) who was born in Oklahoma City. Bo Diddley had recorded "Talk About A Party" in 1955 and it was on a single.
Harris produced the songs "Stick Shift" and "Cruisin'" by The Duals in 1961, which coincidentally producer H.B. Barnum hired Gerald Goodwin as bass player and Hal Blaine as drummer on "Stick Shift." Gerald was in The Accents with Leon Russell and David Gates in Tulsa in 1957-1958, along with their Will Rogers High schoolmate Don Kimmel.
Ripley was Leon's recording engineer before he started his own successful band The Tractors, and invented and made guitars.
