To make the case that JOI was sentient - look at the robotics that Boston Dynamics makes today - soon, that will be on all robots, and the problem of robotic computers not be in agile enough to interact in human dominated spheres will be over.

Soon after, the tech would be a commodity. In the same way, by 2049, Sentient AI would have been created, and also commoditized.

Sure, just like humans, they are given base instincts, so JOI would have imprinted on K, just like ducklings to their mother (and no doubt a smaller scale thing happens in humans too). But that doesn't mean JOI was just 'faking it' because 'she was programmed to'.

That's what I choose to believe, and its obvious the movie left it up to the viewers interpretation. that is, imo, an even more dystopian future than one in which JOI was a mere 'program'.
