I guess that I came here after experiencing the irritation of the trails and ads for the WGC advertorial looking for validation for my irritability.
I really appreciate your detailed takedown of the doc so that I don't have to watch and marvel at its enormous budget.
So why do I feel that I've ended up watching a lengthy documentary about gold anyway - the thing I was trying to avoid?

You say gold is used for mirrors in space telescopes because of its ability to be polished, but I'm fairly sure that is incorrect. The reason it was used in JWST was basically its color. The yellowish color of gold is a byproduct of the material's reflectivity of the lower wavelengths of light. It was the best material to use as the surface of a mirror specifically for infrared light, which is optimal for looking at extremely distant objects due to the redshifting of light being a function of the distance from the light's point of emission.

I just noticed the "gold open"

Until two years ago I used to live in a small rural town in France near a gold mine that was exploited until the 1950's. Even now, 70 years later the town is still dealing with the aftermath of that exploitation, mostly arsenic and iron pollution. During the 30 years it was active 10 tonnes of gold was extracted generating 700 000 tones of residues of exploitation. Those residues have been partially removed but a lot of it still remains, it looks like sand dunes. The access to those dune weren't restricted until 2017. It was also only in 2017 that some very basic measures against water pollution were put in place. Some studies and analysis were done by a government agency but it's conclusion were not made public to the people leaving nearby.

You know, it’s interesting to see the progression of Dan’s inspirations for these videos. During research for Line Goes Up he probably found out about Decentraland, and during Decentraland he found out about the Superstonk/GME subreddits because the AMC thing. During all of that he was looking up stuff that tripped the get rich quick/finance ad bots to target him, which is where we got Contrepreneuers and this gold documentary.
