Maybe artists don't starve. After attaining 2 degrees in fine art and in graphic art, I made a damned good living at it. I also spent time as a costume designer doing reproductions of different clothing styles, I also made a lot of lace -Venetian, Irish crochet. I did pretty well but I always felt "Phony and pretentious, unfulfilled. After much soul searching I embarked on a medical career and it opened my eyes . I saw what a vain, phony, shallow, pretentious person I had been. I mean, who really cares about art history, knowing all about famous artists and duplicating their style. This does nothing to help other people. For me, art was a display of ego and being hung up on trivia! I.proceeded to BURN EVERY DRAWING, PAINTING, SCULPTURE, BOOK , ART MAGAZINE AND DESTROYED MY ART SUPPLIES WITH ACID. I NOW HAVE MY GOAL OF EVENTUALLY BECOMING A SURGEON OF RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY. I want to use my life to help people by restoring them to a normal appearance. All those years I wasted f--king around on canvas when I could have done something REALLY WORTH WHILE. I was happy though because I had to do illustration work for my medical classes which got a lot of compliments. Oh well, at least all the years I spent on art weren't a TOTAL WASTE

Ik this is like 1 year old, but this helped me so much rn. Hearing that there really are so many things I could do as an artist that can make money is really reassuring, and I really needed that. I'm very glad that this channel exists, and I'm sure it'll be helpful to me again :]

I would love to make copies of my originals. But most to copy a 11X14 cost 10 dollars just for ONE Print , problem is I do not always have money to pay for prints. 8X10" would be 7 dollars. But told it does not sell, but could try. Art fairs cost MONEY to enter, but best to have art in Fames, $$$more money ,extra hidden costs. such as transportation booth fee. I cant 't afford a Phone, borrowing internet while Pet sitting. Do not own a laptop. So, how . People do NOT KNOW days I go without affording FOOD, so I can pay my rent, and energy bill. which is LOW but charged the SERVICE CHARGE, even I did not use the gas .

I found a good solution for myself. I became a medical caregiver. I decided that the medical field was the way to go. Now Ino longer have to struggle with money, I find more satisfaction helping sick people than I ever did wasting my time with art. There is more of a need for people with good, practical skills. Even when I went to art college, my teachers told me that they had had to do more than scribblings on paper or canvas and get a REAL JOB TO SURVIVE. PRESENTLY WHAT THAT MEANT FOR ME WAS BEING A CAREGIVER WORKING LIVE IN 5 DAYS A WEEK AND MAKING HANDMADE LACE IN MY SPARE TIME WHICH GIVES ME MORE SATISFACTION THAN ART EVER DID. IF YOU ENJOY ART, FINE. DO IT. JUST SAYING, FOR ME , IT WASN'T THE ANSWER!

Well, the starving artist is a myth. Maybe it was born from the 19th century change of the modern artist with Van Gogh, or Modigliani but Van Gogh. These two artists had problems with drugs and alcohol but if they lived longer they probably would become very rich. Chaim Soutine was a starving artist who manage to get rich for example. Picasso and Salvador Dali were really rich. But actually most artists have been quite rich people. From Velasquez, to Titian, Tintoretto, Michelangelo, Leonardo, they all had a lot of priviledge and were sponsored by kings. Rembrandt had a collection of gold and ancient artworks. Some had financial struggle as every person in the world....

Though I appreciate the sentiment this video does seem to come from a position of privilege.
I would urge people to be cautious and take what is said with a grain of salt.

My mother is an artist, she has a degree and has been trying to work self employed for 10 or so years but unfortunately without a substantial fund or considerable social media following (which is near impossible to build especially since apps like Instagram have changed their algorithms) a lot of people will find that their work just doesn’t sell.
Nowadays it is actually MORE difficult to make a career as an artist because the majority of people just don’t have the money to spend on luxuries like art. Alongside this it has become more common to see cheap art, either machine produced from stores or put together through applying filters being purchased in favour of actual art made by a person; not to mention the rise of ai art.

The same difficulty can be found with trying to find jobs in the art industry as most companies want previous experience for all roles meaning that you are expected to work unpaid which is not feasible for anyone of a lower class background.

I would say that you should be cautious in pursuing an art career. Don’t be deterred but if you don’t have money to fall back on ensure that you have supplementary income, of course this sadly means you would be unable to work full time on your passion.
I would also say that if you want a career in the industry get some unpaid work in whilst you are young and able… you know without bills.

I am comic artist & illustrator since 2015, and I'm selling my products (99,9% of them are physical) online since end of 2016. I made thousands of mistakes in this time, I also have learned a lot, but I'm still not happy with my income. And I find your channel very inspirational. I respect your business view, and I hope I will take your advices seriously and make a lot of progess with my little company!

I LOVED THIS/YOUR VIDEO with that much important information. I just have one concern - I am from Spain. I am currently living in my hometown, although I ve spent 5 years living in Japan as an artist but I had to come back for personal issues and now I feel the Spanish community / audience is not always happy to invert money in my art or from my fellow Spanish colleagues. We could sadly say I am starving artist now in Spain. Maybe I should start writing my web page in my bad English and trying to sell overseas … because I think people there are more likely to buy and consume things related to art and culture. what to you think? Actually I am focus on illustrating things related to my culture - so I fight as an illustrator to solve some problems we have with our culture, that’s why I do brand voice on my RRSS in my mother tongue but it is been years and it looks no one in my country have interest in their own culture … I am struggling with this.

I've been a 'starving artist' for the past 8-9 years and still go the same. I have lost hope to earn by my art style. I may be wrong but I don't think without having that business/marketing type personality anyone is able to make money with whatever they do. As marketing and doing business is another kind of art , so basically you need to have or learn two art forms.
