US Sugar #148 - The Sugarfest Express

On Saturday, March 16th, the annual Clewiston Sugar Festival was being held in downtown Clewiston Florida. In addition to food, vendors, and live music, US Sugar #148 was also under steam and the star of the Sugarfest Express! These short 1-hour excursions would take passengers from the Clewiston shops, and out into the cane fields for a scenic ride through Hendry County. For the railfans, today was special, as 148 was equipped with a 6-chime steam whistle, formally used on sister locomotive, FEC #153. 153‘s voice hasn’t been heard in the Clewiston area in over 70 years and though it did take a bit to sound right (as you’ll hear in some of the shots) it was such a beautiful sound that could be heard echoing for miles. So sit back, relax, and enjoy US Sugar #148 on the point of the Sugarfest Express!
