I find it interesting that I’m always being told not to want money by people that have a lot of it…. Good message though.

songs about money resonate with children who grew up eating grass and living in mama's van.

edit: There's a thing called Maslow's hierarchy of needs. here in amerika we are all stuck scrambling for crumbs at the bottom.

What do you think happens when you Bill promote not having kids and support women just working for the man to earn a lot of cash just to blow it on unnecessary materialistic things. The key to happiness is to share that happiness with someone else not something else.

I got to say that one of the things I grew up with without even realizing is covert drug references. Some of them and some of the rising generation are more content with less because they are stoned.

Bill makes so very good points, and I am with him 100% but we have to acknowledge that Bill is just as guilty. He brags about his private jets and lavish lifestyle no less than the rest of he fellow pop stars and movie star friends. It's hard to listen to this even though he speaks full truth. It's just who they are.

Those brands are paying the artists to turn all of their music into commercials people will listen to. They’ve taken over our music and that’s why we have to hear this shit all the time.

Maher accidentally refuted his own argument. His generation grew up listening to hippy sentiments, but did a 180 on that pretty quick, didn't they? Once Boomers became of age in the 1980s, it was all possessions and power all the time. Boomers made being a millionaire and billionaire cool again after their silent generation parents maligned greed for so long. You reap what you sow, and Boomers sewed the gospel of prosperity into every aspect of American culture; the idea that you could never have enough and didn't have to be ashamed.
And why wouldn't Gen Z and Alpha think you have to be a millionaire? Houses in major cities cost over $500K, and $1m is very common. Just a basic undergraduate degree from a state college can close to $100k over the time it takes to pay off the loans. Working a regular job has proven to be a fast road to nowhere is terms of personal wealth. Younger generations think that hustling is the only way to survive.
So, thanks for that former hippies.

Great message. (Even if it was delivered by a rich guy with a lot of material things.) So tired of all these songs that are basically saying, "I'm so awesome because of all the stuff I have." It encourages greed rather than generosity, and it makes people feel like losers if they can't afford expensive cars, clothes, and homes.

Mr. Maher most of the time I agree with you but in this case perhaps US society is reaching the peak of what it has built, the capitalist society that loves money. Despite being stupid and shallow, perhaps it is less hypocritical and falsely moralistic than making a lot of money by pretending that this is not the only thing that matters!
Greetings from Brazil.

I Like Bill, but this generational “young people suck” nonsense is getting out of hand. What about the song “talkin bout my generation?” Forgot to mention that. Each generation rages on the youngest as they age into oblivion.

And it’s rich (pun intended) to hear a guy talk about how you don’t need things talking from his ivory tower of financial security… the younger generations have massive material and financial loss compared to Bill’s generation.

So politely, kick rocks and stop “talkin bout my generation”’s faults.

A rich man telling kids not to worry about money. Hypocrite. Not to mention that you are picking the worst of the worst. There is way more music out there and some from these very same artists that have more important messages. This old man is complaining about music the same way he rolled his eyes when old men of his day did the same thing to him. Maher has just gotten lazy and targets low hanging fruit.

The part where he attributes historic injustices to today’s egregious rap lyrics is an example of Bill’s struggle to totally leave the left.
People like Otis Redding, Ben E King, Sam Cooke, Little Richard, Nat King Cole, and so many more also had lyrics valuing what The Monkey’s, The Beatles, Sonny & Cher did. And those guys ACTUALLY DID live through oppressions!

Anti-pop everything here with my 2 pennies: There's one genre where you don't hear about materialism (in general, there might be a rare exception) is punk/alt rock. The only that comes to mind is Mudhoney's "The Money Will Roll Right In" but it's performed with a lot of vocal eye-rolling sarcasm.
