When I learned to kayak thirty years ago, it was reinforced over and over: stay away from low head dams.

For years I never knew just how dangerous they were. I could tell some were dangerous like this one in the video. Because it has fast moving current & high drop off. But some you can barely notice because one side is only 1 foot higher than the other. It looks like you could just float a boat over the top & head down or back up stream. I had no idea about the strong circulating underwater current.

Low head dams are called drowning machines for a reason and even a great swimmer can lose their life if trapped in the hydraulic. Avoid them at all costs.
