Correction: The 970 Evo Plus actually used TLC, but that just proves my point even more about improved technology.

I never paid ANY attention to the FACT that SDD's DO fail. Glad so many enthusiasts and professionals are paying so much attention to this.

I need to have a backup of backup of my projects. I'm so sick of it, why can't we create a tech that'll have less space but more reliability? My 40GB IDE drive lived for 20+ years, and my 500GB SATA drive lived for 11 years both under heavy everyday load. Why can't we have a 300GB SSD that'll work for like... 50 years? And that'll never fail to keep the data and in case it does - it could be restored.

still running a 500GB western digital caviar black. the drive refused to power up last month. after some digging, i learned that the board diodes failed. i replaced the board with an exact version i found on ebay for $10. saved my data. drive is still working perfectly since 2007. no, it's not my main drive, just a documents drive. my main drive is a 2TB firecuda nvme.

🖐🖐🖐 Professional user question 🖐🖐🖐
I've build a SSD RAID from 6 x 4tb EVO 870 and was wondering what you can recommend to increase its life span?
Its primarily used as a scratch disk for Premiere pro and AVID, so I only read footage from it, and the only files written are draft and final edits (all preview files are sent to seperate 60TB TB3 HDD RAID).

Now understand I do move projects (large projects) to and from this RAID as it's a thunderbolt 4 enclosure with hardware raid card, as it's needed to handle large 8K projects, preventing bottle necks in my new M2 ultra system. The RAIDs capacity is 20TB and my projects average anywhere between 4-10TB. I always leave 20% unused and once a project is complete it gets media managed to another 200TB HDD RAID then LTO. I would welcome your opinion on what lifespan I can expect to get out of this SSD RAID?

NOTE: I'm probably cycling 10TB in and out of it every 3 months and its configured as RAID5

Any light you can shed on my configuration would be very helpful 🙌( I had a basic understanding of SSDs when selecting size vs cost vs IOPS ) but just wanted to say, the way to clearly explained how SSDs work has elevated my technical understanding of storage and how solid state memory should be used in professional applications, KEEP UP THE GREAT CONTENT 🫡

How can SSD be more reliable than HDD? HDD surface has no limitation for write cycle count. Only mechanical aging which is insignificant comparing to flash memory degradation.

Now we can store data on DNA.

I would say technology has come a long way

Deactivating cells and re-allocating sectors is still much safer than a head crash of a HDD. An SSD will still be readable after some cells failed, but a HDD is dead after a head crash. That's why you built a RAID array, for redundant data storage.

The SSD max can go up to 20 - 25 years of judicious use. Unlike the HDD'S life of 10 - 15 years of judicious use. In my personal opinion.

Hi!
About HDDs not SSDs:
1.- Are the cache of desktop PC internal HDDs are usually SSD caches?
2.- For two Internal Hard Drive HDD – 3.5 Inch SATA used in RAID 1 IN A PC for a LONG-TERM STORAGE, between those HDDs?
--- 5400 RPM 256MB cache;
--- 7200 RPM 64MB cache;
--- 5400 RPM 64MB cache;
--- 7200 RPM 256MB cache.
A.- Witch one is faster;
B.- And witch one would normally have longer life.
3.- Do 6Gb/s or 12Gb/s specifications matter?
4.- Do I have to worry about SRM? Can we find CRM HDDs today?

I have so many questions, but with 1,500 previous comments, I'll take the chance and post a few.
1. How does using partitions and virtual machines affect the whole SSD? Based on your comments about reallocation, I assume it makes no difference, and writing to a small VM counts as writing to the whole drive.
2. I always thought that failure in a SSD comes at once, and no bad signs are evident like clicking sounds in a HDD. Is that not true? Can I actually use SMART and scanning for bad sectors to anticipate the day?
3. How about a nand-based device like a Kindle? Can I predict its remaining life by scanning for bad sectors?
I hope @ThioJoe sees this.

I certainly recommend that people install a RAMDRIVE in their system and allocate a nice amount of RAM to it, then redirect Temporary Internet Files there. There are several ramdrive drivers out there, and they are often free up to 4GB which is plenty for a normal user.

For Firefox and Chrome, there are descriptions on the net, how to do this, as it isn’t 100% straightforward. I even go as far as modifying the registry to redirect cookies there, (You have to modify all the references to the regular path to the COOKIES ( and HISTORY) to achieve this, to "B:\COOKIES" even the system path variable. Backup your registry of course.)

plus having Photoshop using also the ramdrive as one of its temp- drives. From time to time, when it is neccessary to unpack large archives to check the contents, then of course, using the ramdrive comes in handy.

And one reboot later, all your temporary garbage files, are cleaned out, though Windows sneakily still store a lot of cookies on the harddrive somehow, not sure how to get rid of them, maybe someone has an advice for this. There is one caveat though, if you set TEMP and TMP environmental variables here, make sure to make the ramdrive big enough, 2-4 GB so that the temporary files stored here during an install will not run out of space. In a few cases, you might want to revert this, if installing a very large program or something.

It seems like installations expecting their temporary files being still present after a reboot, is a thing of the past, however in the rare case that an installation needs to continue to install something else, after a reboot, and looks for the unpacked files in the TEMP-folder, then you must also revert to have TEMP set to WINDOWS\TEMP - temporarily.

And yes, as soon as you have made the ramdrive with an empty TEMP, COOKIES and HISTORY directory in it, save the image to the harddrive (with the ramdrive utility) and then have it compressed, it will take up just a few kilobytes maybe 50 or 100 even though it is 4GB and be super fast to load. If you omit this step, you might experience a noticeable delay during startup, especially on older computers, when the ramdrive driver loads the file into the memory - 4GB still takes some time to read though it is fast on new computers and you anyway want to save the space on your harddrive.

The ramdrive together with an SSD will make even 10-15 years old computers, feel as fast as a completely new computer when running everyday tasks, surfing the web, light image processing and so on.

Notice that the Temporary Internet Files folder will by default be hidden, so make sure to show hidden files and folders, to verify that you succeded to redirect everything to the ramdrive.

I noticed that @Thiojoe use the letter B: for one of his drives and it so happens that I use the letter B: for my ramdrive, but you are free to use whatever letter you want, which is not already taken, though it seems more tidy to use this letter (or perhaps A:) as it rarely is used by any other drive.

I think most people severely underestimate the lifespan of an SSD. I'm using a Kingston 480GB HyperX SSD. This has been my main drive since 2013. It's by no means a new SSD with all the latest technology. In fact, this was back when SSDs were finally becoming mainstream. It has gone through six Windows reinstallations and countless big-sized games being installed and uninstalled. It's still working just as well as it did ten years ago!

This is why I don't bother with SSDs for general storage. SSDs are good for backup drives that are only going to be written infrequently and maybe even just once. The other good use for them is for the OS drive, where writes can be minimized. HDDs have their own set of risks, but the technology is more mature and in my experience, you're less likely to have catastrophic loss with a HDD than a SSD.

well. my first ssd, was a OCZ vertex 2 in december of 2010. a 120gb drive for 199 bucks. very expensive for the day. that ssd died after 14 months. i got a new one, was cheaper by now, that died just before the 2 year mark. after that, i never bought ocz again. but my crucial mx 256gb didnt last 3 years eighter. nowadays, with windows and all the updates and steam downloads, my drives get a lot of milage. i just bought a new nvme 1045 hours of runtime on it but it already wrote 1,046 TB
