It can definitely make you a whiny idiot who thinks that no one should be allowed to point out how terrible your work is unless they intend to fix your garbage code for you in a PR.
ОтветитьThanks :)
ОтветитьWhy fork it?
Ответитьwhy fork everything? just create PRs
ОтветитьThis sounds great I wanna do this
ОтветитьWhat's most wild to me is how often people run into an issue or hurdle when installing some software then don't just go in and add their steps to resolve into the projects documentation. If I ever have an issue with documentation and I find the answer and it isn't in the documentation already, I open a PR with those changes added.
ОтветитьI might have been intrigued if you hadn’t said it could change my life
Ответитьim sorry to pop any bubble, but ... OSS-contributions will never "change any life". Employers LOVE OSS contributions of applicants - and they also select applicants based on this, but heres the thing : thats only "mostly" true in USA. Everywhere else on the planet : employers "might" look at your contributions but their weight will be rather small, in terms of classifying the applicant.
If you think your github is your CV you pretty much failed the very first step in finding a job. It isnt. At all.
OSS contributions only "really" matter if you're new to the job, just finished college or want to enter software dev laterally / without any prior skill or knowledge outside of your OSS contributions.
Later in life, employers mostly select applicants based on "years of experience" and technologies mentioned in your CV, as well as academic qualification of course ... and noone will actually use your github as any sort of qualification-indicator regarding your application anymore. Im sorry.
But "do" keep contributing to your little OSS projects - the world needs to have OSS contributions.
This is so far the most clear-cut explanation and also has motivated me to contribute more!
Thank you so much for the video !!
AMAZING video. Loved it. But I have a request: please create a longer version of this video explaining each step of the process in a bit more detail.
Ответитьscroll slow buddy, its making me dizzy....
ОтветитьHow do you find the issue that is being talked about on GitHub, in the code? Do I need to ask the maintainers where I can look to find it?
ОтветитьLove thisssss
ОтветитьThanks very usefull
ОтветитьThis video is golden . Thanks for sharing and keep it up please !!
ОтветитьWould be nice if I knew how to code lmao.
ОтветитьNice thanks
Ответитьthe first time is always the hardest sent me... 😂
ОтветитьThis video alone shows that this dude knows how to do useful contributions in general.
ОтветитьGood video, gave the push I needed. Thank you! I don't think though that an actual workplace decides whether to employ you based on your GitHub contribution unless this is your first in the industry
ОтветитьContributing is fine if you are paid enough to do it.
ОтветитьI just subscribed based on how effective this video was, keep up the good work.
ОтветитьYou will find the guys only edit Readme of so many projects to fool you that he is contributing to the code base. This will lead to the pathetic end of using github as resume
Ответитьi am starting !
ОтветитьI bet I would do this: go to a project our large company uses. Contribute and break it horribly. Now everyone in my company goes to see the github history and sees who broke it.
ОтветитьLoved it, thanks!
ОтветитьI'm genuinely curious to know what GitHub contributor demographics are. Is it mostly hobbyists? New programmers starting out? Industry veterans? Retirees? Or managers that don't get to code for work anymore? I'm a professional SWE, so after the day's done, the last thing I want to do is more development that feels like work - I rather enjoy the peace and quiet of doing side projects in private, my way, my style, and nobody to complain or blame.
ОтветитьJust fixing typos makes a difference?
Ответитьnice
ОтветитьYou were really inspiring with that
Ответитьhow to find repos to contribute to
ОтветитьOr.... get paid for the work you do, and use it to pay rent and eat... decisions decisions
ОтветитьDude taught us all THAT in 3 minutes.
Thank you so much.
Interesting, but what do you mean in the end by "it might just pay off" ? What is this payoff you are talking about ? Landing a job ? Can you explain please ?
ОтветитьThe problem with that scene is the drama, the jealousy, the backstabbing, the egos. the lack of coherence and professionalism.
ОтветитьI would've never clicked if it wasnt that short. Great Video!!
ОтветитьGreat video. Short and sweet. Thank you
ОтветитьGreat Video! Thank you.
ОтветитьPoor programmer here. How can it change my life? I'm getting too old to hope for "some day". Tired of being almost homeless.
ОтветитьThat be sort of fun, would give me back a sense of belonging. Haven't done a tech documentation for a lot of time. I make typos too but at the same time I also spot them, I double check, but not always. Anyway...
ОтветитьCould you make a more detailed video stepping through the cloning and branching process please? I'm new to using Github and coding in general. How do we open a terminal?
ОтветитьNo. You give free of your time. Behind you, a guy rewrite your code because he doesn't like the way you code. At the end of the day, you lost your time.
ОтветитьI thought this would be something actually life-changing, but it's just a resume. If I needed a job, I'd have one by now.
Ответитьthat was a straight to the point, very informative and cool to watch video. Great stuff man. I just started on the computer science carreer and this was 3min of solid help in my path
ОтветитьThanks, I would rather be paid for the work I do.
ОтветитьThanks great video, but you didn't explain how contributing will "Change Your Life", I mean how it's beneficial for you ? Usually when you put your GitHub profile in your CV, recruiters will check your own projects that you made yourself and not your commits to other projects !
Ответитьwhy do you fix your mouth like that when you speak.
ОтветитьI should try it sometime although what project do I contribute to? I would wanna contribute to something that I like but I don't know any other projects than Godot
Ответитьlike, putting yourself to work - i'm in zombieland, so this is needed
ОтветитьI've always been really intimidated to contributing to an open-source project, but i think I just need to give it a go. Just looking through other people's code will be helpful, and making some changes can help me practice more all the things that I've learned. Will have to give this a try soon!
