Pelosi and Feinstein Are a Big Problem For Democrats

That’s the ages of Representatives Dianne Feinstein and Nancy Pelosi, both who remain in the House and Senate. With Trump and Biden also pushing ages 77 and 80 respectively, the nation is having a reckoning with what it means to have octogenarians running for office.

Recently, Pelosi, the former House majority leader, announced that she would not only see through her term but run for re-election and extend her 36-year House career. “Now more than ever our City needs us to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery,” she declared as she posed in front of a painted lady backdrop. Many political analysts thought she would step down after the Democrats lost the House in 2022 but nevertheless, she persisted.

Then there’s Senator Dianne Feinstein. As she experiences ongoing medical troubles, including being hospitalized with shingles and seemingly not knowing where she is, she is set on finishing out her term no matter what critical votes she might miss. In May, even AOC said that Feinstein’s refusal to step down is ‘causing great harm.’

Three Democrats, including Barbara Lee, are running to replace her in 2024 but Gavin Newsom recently announced that he would only make an ‘interim appointment’ if Feinstein resigned. Newsom previously said that he'd appoint a Black woman to a vacancy but now has clarified that it would only be a ‘care taking’ role. So, is age just a number?
