Yes perhaps in order to adhere to the strict religious based beliefs and morals of the time they weren’t as open or as obvious when engaging in sexual trysts but men absolutely engaged in them with both men and women who were not their wives! Unlike contemporary society where these conversations about sexuality are now acceptable and taking place openly for both men and women back then it was not. However that certainly doesn’t mean that men were not as sexually promiscuous as they are now they most definitely were and whilst society turned a blind eye to a man’s indiscretions if a woman was caught or accused of the same promiscuous behaviour they were usually vilified, ostracised and in some instances executed!! History is littered with examples of this going all the way back to the Roman Empire!! For example Henry VIII he had 6 wives and numerous mistresses and like many men of that era often engaged in sexual relations outside of marriage, mostly because historically marriage wasn’t about respect and love it was a business and political tactic to increase a man’s wealth and power. It was an unspoken but accepted norm for men to do this, especially when they were at war for long periods of time they would take mistresses or visit brothels you would have been hard pressed to find a man who did remain faithful to his wife! On the other hand if a woman was caught or even suspected or accused of cheating on her husband or having engaged in sexual relations before marriage- well all you need to do is ask Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard who were married to Henry VIII…….oh wait a minute you can’t coz yep you guessed it they were both executed after the ‘patriarchy’ - in this case the Kings Privy Council which was entirely made up of men- found them both guilty of unproven and unsubstantiated rumours and accusations of having had sexual relations with multiple men!!! 🤦‍♀
