By the early 50's the music of the past-(60) years, the traditional "Latin Music" or Caribbean Latin music from New York, Puerto Rico and Cuba, was wearing out and losing followers. The famous night clubs dedicated to this music were beginning to close, the worst case was the closing of the Palladium in New York . On the other hand "Cuba closed its market for more than 20 years, from 1960 to 1980, due to the revolution, there were no longer night clubs or dance halls in Havana." That old traditional music, already needed a renovation, revitalization and update, according to the new times. Before the arrival of Salsa, the common rhythms had their particular characteristics, these were: La Guaracha, the Son, the Rumba, the Mambo, the Cha cha cha, Pachanga, Charanga, Boogaloo and other rhythms that aged and lost space and popularity (†) . Thus, the new salsa movement was formed in the mid-60s and by the beginning of the 70s it had already matured. At this time, New York City was home to more than one million five hundred thousand (1,500,000) Puerto Ricans and around fifty thousand (50,000) of them were musicians. Since 1962, Puerto Ricans were already beginning to use the word "Salsa" to define this new musical sound, its promoter and the one who would commercialize this word would be Izzy Sanabria .

The new sound of Salsa, "Guaracha Jazz", brought by Puerto Ricans: Tito Puente , Tito Rodríguez, Rafael Cortijo and Ismael Rivera, Richie Ray and Bobby Cruz, Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, Willie Rosario, Bobby Valentin, Roberto Rohena and his Apollo Sound, Sonora Ponceña and Tommy Olivencia, just to mention a few, had a clear Puerto Rican flavor and that changed and transformed everything. A new and more dynamic sound was created, which emphasized: ( mostly Puerto Rican musicians and singers, a trombone section, electric piano, electric bass, bells, the use of the Puerto Rican cuatro, the Bomba drum beat, Aguinaldos and Seises in the musical compositions, the insistence on the guarachero style, as well as Puerto Rican lyrics and compositions, combined with Latin Jazz style solos) all in keeping with the new times that would change the history of Caribbean music. The new nightclubs were now overwhelmingly owned by Puerto Ricans, an example of this was the Chetahh Nightclub (owned by Ralph Mercado), where "La Salsa" burst onto the scene in an organized way.

There was an immediate rejection and attack by the older Cuban musicians to this emerging music. Arsenio Rodriguez, upset, left New York, for lack of job offers, his "traditional and typical Cuban" music was no longer popular, it was too slow and did not fit the times or the fast-paced dynamics of the city. Israel Lopez "Cachao" lamented the lack of opportunities, Mario Bauza and Machito lost prominence and fell into oblivion, they in turn, classified this genre as having low musical value and vulgar. In fact, in 1976, Mario Bauza and Machito's sister "Graciela" left their orchestra (Machito's) to try to venture into "Salsa". Damaso Perez Prado said that this music was a musical product for stupid people. The Cuban flutist Jose Fajardo, on the contrary, made his orchestra only with Puerto Rican musicians and went to live in Puerto Rico. And the critics disappeared, as did the Cuban musical groups in New York . In communist Cuba in the 60s and 70s, they were refused entry and were not broadcast on the radio, nor were there groups, clubs or dance halls where Salsa was played in that country . In the 80s, Fania visited Cuba and at the Carl Marx Theater, when the orchestra began to play, the Cubans got up from their seats and left the room. To top it off, the Cuban exile in Miami took it upon themselves to mark and discredit any Puerto Rican artist who wanted to go to Cuba, as happened with Andy Montañez . The Cuban rejection of the "incipient Salsa" was a sign of contempt for the new musical genre. Puerto Ricans had created a new sound that evidently generated unrest and disgust; the Boricuas now practically carried the torch and representation of the new Afro-Antillean music alone.

Among the innovators was the group Cortijo y su Combo with the "Sonero Mayor" Ismael Rivera, who in the 1950s integrated the Afro-Puerto Rican rhythms called bomba and plena into guarachas, and in a modern format for dance orchestra. This new music was from the neighborhood, from poor and humble people, it spoke of daily life, of the city, of the ghetto, it spoke of drugs, of violence, of revenge, of infidelity (Juana Peña, Calle Luna Calle Sol, Sigue Guisando, Quitate de la Via Perico, el Negrito Bembón, Pa' los Caserios, de Barrio Obrero a la 15) was for the old musicians something like classless music and of the New York and Puerto Rican plebs. The more street-wise sound of Willie Colón and his albums with gangster songs, such as; El Malo, Guisando, La Gran Fuga, awakened the imagination of young Latinos raised in economically deprived neighborhoods. Willie Colon, integrated Afro-Caribbean styles and Puerto Rican rhythms such as seises, bomba, plenas, aguinaldos, along with the Puerto Rican cuatro and he, along with Hector Lavoe "The Singer of Singers", became icons of the new musical style called "Salsa". However, as everything changes, "Later on Salsa would evolve" and became less street-oriented and more romantic, becoming the most desired and envied jewel, as a Caribbean musical genre. Other countries now began to copy the new salsa instrumentation from New York and Puerto Rico and created their own "Salsa", attached to their customs. Those who previously hated and rejected it now shout "That's my daughter" "That's my daughter". Yes, of course, Pepe...
