The speed of the wave is important in deep water... as it approaches land the wave slows but gains amplitude (size). I bet it was 10 times as high when it hit land.

Don't tsunami waves have more distance between each other? Also, I don't think they would be as amazed sounding if they know people would be dying and they would be working overtime for the next few weeks.
