The Lawsuit: A woman, identified as Jane Doe A.G. in court documents, filed a civil lawsuit in Utah against Jake Retzlaff. The lawsuit accuses him of sexual assault, battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. It seeks damages greater than $300,000 for each count.

Alleged Incident: The lawsuit claims the incident occurred in November 2023 at Retzlaff's home. The plaintiff states she met Retzlaff on social media and went to his home with a friend. After her friend left, she and Retzlaff began kissing, and she alleges she "did not want to do anything more" and tried to "de-escalate the situation" by pulling away and saying "wait." However, the lawsuit claims Retzlaff continued to escalate, allegedly "pinching her hard" and forcing himself on her. The filing states that Retzlaff "raped, strangled, and bit" her, and she claims she passed out during the alleged assault due to his hands around her neck.

Plaintiff's Actions After Incident: The woman states she went to a local hospital a few days after the alleged incident, where a rape kit examination was performed, and pictures were taken of a cut on her lip and bruises on her neck and inner thighs. She then connected with the Provo Police Department.
Police Involvement and Discrepancy: The lawsuit alleges that she initially did not name Retzlaff to the police out of fear but later did so when an officer inquired, noting another complaint against a football player. The lawsuit further claims that Provo police then "encouraged her not to do anything because, as they claimed, 'sexual assault victims never get justice.'"

Provo Police Response: The Provo Police Department has publicly refuted this claim, stating that their records show a phone report was received on November 27, 2023, from a woman with similar initials and account. They assert that the complainant was treated with "courtesy and care" and given multiple opportunities to identify her abuser but declined, leading the case to be closed. They deny that any officer discouraged the woman from pursuing charges, emphasizing their team's dedication to providing justice for victims of sexual abuse. They also stated that collected evidence revealed no actionable investigative leads at the time.
Jake Retzlaff's Response: Jake Retzlaff's attorney, Mark Baute, has publicly stated that his client is "factually innocent" and that they look forward to proving that innocence through the judicial system. Baute also stated that Retzlaff's focus this year will be on football.
BYU's Statement: Brigham Young University issued a statement confirming they became aware of the civil lawsuit on May 21, 2025. They affirmed that the university "takes any allegation very seriously, following all processes and guidelines mandated by Title IX." They also stated they could not provide further comment due to privacy laws and practices for students.
Current Legal Status: As of the current date, no criminal charges have been filed against Jake Retzlaff in connection with this alleged incident. The civil lawsuit is ongoing, and legal analysts suggest such cases can take a significant amount of time to resolve.
