I tried ion propulsion in a 7th grade science fair over 50 years ago, but I couldn't get enough thrust for the thing to move. I think that I was using a battery that was too weak. Hey, I was just a kid...

I've always wondered why we don't build wings with with an ionizing spike wing in front of it and a magnetic field array in the back blade of the wing... that way the spike wing would ionize the air, the ionized air would exert force on the spike wing, and the neutral air that's sent backwards across the actual wing to produce lift.

What if you added more psi? Would it increase speed (more to push against )or would it slow it down (to much in the way) just a curious question.

As a layman I understand the concept of the gas getting expelled. What puzzles me is where does the actual thrust come from to create speed? If outside the ionic engine there is a vacuum? So, what does the gas push against to create the momentum?
