Domhall Gleeson is always so mesmerizing when he plays the romantic lead. I mean, did we not fall in love with him in About Time? Black Mirror's Be Right Back?

I do love Domhnall Gleeson, but this looks like that cringe series "Run" all over again. Please please Domhnall be in something good already. 🙏 This is like the 4th project where love equals to cheating on wife/husband and being miserable for a lifetime. 🙇‍♂️ One of the best actors on the planet, and he keeps appearing in the worst films. Actually, in most of his films he is miserable, for different reasons. Hope this is just a phase and he'll grow it out and he will be awesome in the future projects. 🙏

so she professes some forever love, then changes her mind, leaves him, and then vaguely promises to get back together at some point? she sounds like a flake.

and can we please stop using non-whites as props/sage wisdom counselors for boring white characters?

I really love that they're using their own native accents in this. It's really nice to hear Andrea using that North East lilt. And here's to a reunion between Rodney and Chrissie from Never Let Me Go!

The writer wrote a fairly prosaic, if downbeat romantic journey. Segmented into fanciful short sections.
That seem to defy any sense of normal human relations, outside of the writers head.
The classic "will-they-or-won't-they" trope scenario... stretched out over fifteen years.
*We know this because their mobiles dramatically change shape over the course of their relationship.

But because the narrative was so stereotypical, the writer decided to twist the two protagonists genders over.
So the male is the lovey-dovey, forlorn and the ever longing one, ...and the female is the impossible to fathom,
distant, ridiculously complicated and aloof... male 'workaholic' stereotype.
For many, this may seem too jarring and unnatural. A ploy, rather than a real world possibility.

The regularly 'dumped one' luckily has a sidekick, who's every utterance encapsulates miraculous sage-like profundity.
He adds an unfortunate level of contrivance to the story. As if the writer needed to interject their own thoughts,
into the listeners earholes, as a constant commentary or story device.
Many other plot devices are also hit-or-miss... from 'father figures issues' to TV reports of sudden deaths.
It tries a little too hard, to be all neat and tidy ...with its unravelling story.

The actors do seem up for it though. Mr.Gleeson definitely has the quasi-feminine mystic firmly in his repertoire.
Ms.Riseborough's 'strange emotive energy' works for the inscrutable part she was given.
Although, the story rests... on if you can accept the role reversal,
accept that a man would act so permissively for such an incredibly long period of time?

It all sort of works, until it doesn't. Till money magically solves all of the loose ends.
The writer forgetting that money is antithetical to Western ideals about love and to love stories in general.
Sudden wealth is not a substitute for unrequited love... or erratic, non-committal behaviour.
It is an American style ending ...that really isn't required or even welcome.

When she was in Oblivion she was so very beautiful!! I do not know why these actresses become so emaciated-looking over time! They all end up looking way too skinny: Robin Wright, Anya Taylor Joy, Michelle Williams just to name a few.

I almost always enjoy all the shows presented on Masterpiece. But I found this one contemptible in every way. I hated the character of Alice, I was disappointed in the character of Jack. Really, I detested it so much that I can’t remove the foul taste in my mouth. The only thing worse, I suppose, is Trump.

I'm torn watching this series. The love between Alice and Jack is real, but her games have caused them more than it's worth. She runs away, comes back and runs away again every time. She is unstable and truly needs help, but only he can provide her the friendship she needs. In her indecisiveness, she ruins his marriage, his relationships, her engagement, and at times cause friction between his colleagues. Him falling under her spell truly clouded his judgement. A woman like this will ultimately cause ruin and sometimes, as evident, death. But the love is real. She reminds me of Jenny from Forest Gump. Was it worth it? I think not. A sad love story.

Alice is very toxic. Jack should avoid her. She ruined his marriage, pushes him away, and when things start to get better in his life, she shows up again and destroys everything.
I watch it solely because of Gleeson, who can express a whole range of emotions. Although, I want to shake Jack to get him to give up on Alice.
