Basically the story means that if you are strongly willed to transcend wordly pleasures then and only then, you can ascend to immortality. However, my experience is that you must always be peaceful no matter what (equanimity). I spent sometime with ascetic nuns and monks and though we meditated all day long, the human drama was still happening at least from my perspective. I fell in love in the monastery, silently in love... To free yourself, you have to free your mind and never identify with thoughts, ideologies, identities and so on. When you start to understand that even your own self is an illusion then you are on the right path.

Just got done watching a french documentary about a monastery in the Wudang Mountains. A very youthful and beautiful french girl was the narrator. She first explained that she decided to become a Taoist Priest (ie: male Taoist Priest, not "nun"). She was dressed as a male priest, but clearly strikingly pretty. The various Taoist masters dutifully explained a number of concepts and showed the documentary TV crew charts, explaining some simplistic (mostly buddhist) concepts about the 5 elements. Then they made the girl-priest take a vow of silence! LOL (Maybe that is easier than celibacy?)
