What is the story of place?
As humans, we naturally connect our world through stories. If we find a deeper, common connection to a place, to the land, to our communities, can we create enthusiasm around uniting for solutions?
To explore the story of a place, it requires digging deeper than the data and not looking at the land or a place as something that is there to serve us, but rather its story in its own right.
It requires a deeper listening, to observe how the elements of a place interact, who supports who, what has evolved to improve its role, over billions of years or over the last month.
The visuals seen here are of wild spaces, but the story of place applies to urban and rural human communities as well. If we identify the unique energy of a place or a community, we can engage with a common vision. We can reconnect to our communities and the power of collaborating for solutions. We can reconnect and improve our relationship with the non-human elements of this world, which literally allow for life to exist on this planet.
Within the story of place is the acknowledgment of the people who stewarded and honored these lands for thousands of years. Each tribe unique in its ways and cultures. Within the story of a place is acknowledging that the lands were stolen and appropriated for the benefit of others. But that Native Peoples are resilient towards attempts of removal and thrive and stand strong today to continue to defend these lands.
Stories have pain as well as beauty. If we come together to acknowledge the stories of the past, we can unite for a strong future. We can support one another in our fights, recognizing we are a human collective, capable of wonderful things, together.
What is the story of the place you call home? Your street? Your mountains? What elements have evolved to coexist better? Maybe it’s a nearby river and the life it supports, or people who have come together to support a neighbor in need or gather at a restaurant that has been in the neighborhood for generations.
